The salmon run: life, death, struggle, cooperation, bit of patriotism, socks in the water, and - most of all - light. taken in Étienne Brûlé Park by @galit_r

The salmon are running in Toronto and the evening light was perfect. Throngs of people gathered by the Humber River to watch the spectacle of the fish trying to jump a small waterfall on their way upstream to spawn, completing their life cycle. Every time a fish managed to clear that hurdle, the entire crowd would cheer and clap. And a number of people waded into the river to fish as well. Buuuut tbh I’m pooped so here’s the first photo I took this evening and I’ll post the rest of the set soon :) taken in Étienne Brûlé Park by @galit_r

Can I get away with one more of these?
This isn’t how I typically shoot and it isn’t how I typically edit either. That makes me really happy because it’s been a long time since I picked up a camera and felt like just playing. Whether people like these or not, or I explore this style more or not, it’s nice to feel a creative spark start to resurface.
All the love to @mouthwooedher who I’ve been shooting with for over a decade. by @galit_r

A content warning because this may be a tough one for some people to look at. Shot for the @globeandmail

In November, Elena Marcu, 67, was undergoing her fifth cycle of maintenance chemotherapy at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. In February, after two biopsies, she’d learned that she had stage 4 glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. It was in her left insula and cutting it out was too risky. Elena is part of a clinical trial that uses microbubble-enhanced focused ultrasound treatment (FUS) to non-invasively open the blood-brain barrier, a technique that can enhance the delivery of chemotherapy to the brain.
Watching her go through this was difficult so I can only imagine how difficult it is to be living it. But the only time Elena shed tears was when she briefly spoke about her grandchildren. Her cancer sadly will not be cured but a new study published in The Lancet showed that microbubble-ehanced FUS can help patients live longer. Sunnybrook researchers say the medication temozolomide is a standard chemotherapy drug used to treat glioblastoma, but studies show less than 20 per cent reaches patients’ brains. Overcoming the blood-brain barrier has been a goal of clinicians and scientists for many decades.

For @thelocal_to - an overnight assignment in what felt like the middle of nowhere or maybe another planet. Worm farming starts after the sun goes down and the temperature cools. On this July night the work started at 10. For hours, labourers, almost all immigrants from Southeast Asia, squat and hunch and crawl on the dampened ground pulling worms in silence, or rarely, with soft music playing into an earphone. Red lights are less aversive to the worms and tend to be used rather than white. It looks like a slow, silent, backbreaking dance done in outer space. Writer Inori and I retreat to our cars to sleep on the field for a few hours around 1 am then wake up at 5. The sky has lightened, the air is misty, the pickers are still picking but are starting to wrap up. Bags upon bags of wriggling worms are emptied into styrofoam crates. On a good night, each labourer can pick thousands of worms. Most will end up in Nick Alafogiannis‘s scarborough factory, A1 Bait, then shipped worldwide.

Inori Roy wrote as compellingly about worms as I’ve seen anyone write about anything so I recommend giving it a read on The Local’s website.

A huge thanks to the wonderful @chloeellingson for this one and for the great layout online ❤️ by @galit_r

I’ve been hopeless at posting this year but I have had some wonderful assignments that I’m thankful for and will try to show. Better late than never, right? This was the last to be published, for a @globeandmail story by Brad Wheeler on A RUPTURE A CANYON A BIRTH, the new album by @jane_inc_ in the aftermath of a car accident, a break up, and a vocal cord cancer diagnosis (Carlyn is in recovery). My editor Janice said she envisioned something “soft, foggy, introspective.” by @galit_r
