Join us this coming Saturday, 10 October 2026, for an artist-led walkabout with Blessing Blaai, as he takes us through his current exhibition, Surrogate Emotions.

Blaai will be joined in conversation by artist Vivien Kohler, offering an engaging dialogue around the ideas, processes and visual language that shape the exhibition. Together, they will explore the relationship between the physical and spiritual, while considering Blaai’s recurring use of buildings, interiors and architectural spaces as sites of memory, emotion and human experience. The conversation will also unpack the role of light, geometry, shifting forms and architectural structures in shaping the atmosphere and emotional tension within his paintings, and how these elements extend beyond representation to become a language through which space, perception and feeling are constructed.

Join us at Gallery MOMO for an intimate encounter with the artist and a deeper exploration of the ideas and processes behind Surrogate Emotions.

Reminder: The walkabout will begin at 11:30 AM and run until 12:30 PM

Surrogate Emotions explores the space between the physical and spiritual, the individual and collective. Through faceless figures, architectural forms and shifting fields of colour, Blessing Ntsikelelo Blaai considers emotion as something that can be carried, transferred and shared.

The figures are spirits and souls rather than specific individuals. Without facial features or fixed identities, they become vessels for memory, emotion and lived experience, allowing viewers to see themselves within the works. Rooted in Blaai’s encounters with Johannesburg’s urban spaces, the paintings bring together architecture, colour and human presence to reflect on the ways we inhabit, remember and carry the spaces and experiences around us.

Gallery MOMO Director Odysseus Shirindza reflects on Blessing Blaai’s Ambient Heart, a work that explores perception, colour and emotional ambiguity within his current solo exhibition, Surrogate Emotions.

Through layered applications of colour, Blaai creates depth and movement, while the central figure shifts emotionally depending on the viewer’s position. What may appear judgmental or unsettled from one perspective takes on an entirely different emotional register from another, inviting reflection on the subjective nature of perception.

Subtle details within the composition reference Blaai’s own artistic journey, including paintbrushes placed on a bookshelf and a painting depicted as a work in progress. These elements speak to his understanding of art as an ongoing process—one shaped by making, reflection and continual becoming.

Ambient Heart ultimately brings together colour, perspective and personal experience, encouraging the viewer to engage with the work as an evolving emotional encounter.

Currently on View I Surrogate Emotions a solo exhibition by Blessing Blaai

Colour becomes both a spatial and emotional language within Blessing Blaai’s Surrogate Emotions. It creates depth, directs the eye and shifts the mood of each work, functioning not merely as an aesthetic device but as a means through which emotion is constructed and experienced.

Blaai’s use of sharp lines, defined edges and geometric forms further establishes a visual vocabulary rooted in the urban landscape. Drawing from the spaces and architecture he encountered while growing up in Troyeville, these structures evoke the rigid contours of buildings, streets and the built environment, while simultaneously becoming vessels through which memory and lived experience are translated.

Together, colour, geometry and spatial construction reveal Blaai’s ability to transform familiar environments into psychologically charged spaces, where the boundaries between the external world and interior experience become increasingly fluid.

Day 3 | FNB Art Joburg

As the FNB Art Joburg draws to a close, we spotlight two of our stable artists, Fhatuwani Mukheli and Phoka Nyokong, whose practices engage distinct yet interconnected questions of history, identity, representation and cultural memory.

Phoka Nyokong examines the intersections of Western painting traditions and African sculptural heritage, interrogating the colonial gaze and the enduring questions of cultural ownership and repatriation.
-
Fhatuwani Mukheli explores memory, lineage and Black subjectivity through psychologically resonant portraiture. Drawing from Renaissance and classical painting traditions, he reclaims monumental space for Black bodies, using stillness, light and emotional depth to reconsider histories of visibility and reverence.

FNB Art Joburg | Day 2

Vivien Kohler explores memory, belonging and resilience through fragmented domestic objects, engaging with the complexities of South African history and contemporary experience.
-
Across Re-membering the Journey, The Benediction and Ode of Remembrance, Vivien Kohler explores memory, belonging and resilience through fragmented domestic objects.

Drawing from Andrew Tshabangu’s photographs Middle Passage and Blessing of a Woman (1999), Re-membering the Journey and The Benediction recontextualise intimate narratives through the fragmented form of Delft plates. In Ode of Remembrance, Kohler brings imagery of Black South African resistance into dialogue with these objects, paying homage to the youth of 1976 and their resistance during apartheid, while transforming the decorative into sites of remembrance and reflection.

Fragmentation becomes a language of rupture and displacement, while also suggesting reconstruction, as intimacy, community and resistance persist within the broken.

His work ultimately considers how contested histories can be remembered, reimagined and reassembled through collective memory, connection and resilience.

FNB Art Joburg I Day 2. Today, we turn our focus to one of our gallery artists Blessing Blaai, whose practice engages with memory, spaces between the physical and spiritual, individual and collective.

Blessing Blaai’s practice explores emotion, memory and human connection through faceless figures, architectural forms and shifting fields of colour. Drawing from Johannesburg’s transient urban landscape, Blaai transforms fragments of abandoned architecture, light and memory into imagined geometric spaces.

His anonymous figures become vessels for shared experience, while colour operates as both an emotional and spatial language, moving between physical, psychological and spiritual states.

Blaai’s work reflects on contemporary urban life, where memory, displacement and belonging intersect, transforming personal experience into a broader meditation on the emotions we carry, encounter and share.
