It’s true, fairs are grueling. This business is so far from glamorous (despite my fits). It’s physically strenuous, there are constant conversations with strangers who can be demanding, weird, wonderful, or all three, and endless time spent explaining, watching, waiting, wondering if anything will ever even happen.

But I still believe there is something valuable about putting art into the world this way. Not every interaction leads somewhere, but you meet SO many people across all kinds of industries and backgrounds. It opens doors you didn’t even know existed.

Be curious. Be kind. Be open-minded about people. Learn what seduces them a little, whether it be with another business or a potential client. And ALL of that requires raw authenticity in my opinion. Be willing to understand people outside of what you know. And stomp the phonies! There are a lot — too many.

The charge of watching someone become enthralled by a work of art, and how stripped down and honest that experience is, resets my optimism in this industry every time. My taste is not your taste, and vice versa. Don’t tell me or anyone else what to like. Guide people toward what they’re drawn to, what makes them linger and want to learn more. And don’t chase a sale! Build a rapport. That’s the hardest part, but also the most interesting.

I’m so grossed out by the snobbery and pretentiousness of the art world. Everyone deserves to immerse themselves in the fantasy art provides and don’t tell them they’re wrong for what they like. To be completely absorbed by something and suspended from the trials of life for a moment is for everyone. The FEELING of a piece of art must come first. Not the prestige.

There is something so visceral about creating the conditions for another person to encounter something that interrupts their senses, even briefly.

Art is not just a commodity, even if it exists within a market. It is a language, an atmosphere, a tool to play in someone else’s life. They’re letting you into their world by showing you the art they created, the art they’re showcasing / selling, and the art they’re collecting.

I’ll never get tired of that🖤

There’s something about arum lilies that has stayed with me for years. 🤍🌿

The first time I saw them growing naturally was down by the Cape Town coast. Not arranged in a vase or carefully planted in a garden, but simply there, growing wild and completely at home in the landscape.

I remember being genuinely overwhelmed by their beauty. There was something about those sweeping white petals against the deep greens of the Cape landscape that made me stop and just take them in.

That memory became part of my love for arums, and eventually, part of my art.

Silent Bloom is my interpretation of that quiet beauty. One solitary arum emerging from a deep green background. Simple, peaceful and unapologetically itself.

"DREAMING OF PLUTO"
2015, Robert Pruitt @robertpruitt

The penmanship of Robert Pruitt is warm and intimate. The markings feel alive, the revised outline and random smeared coffee wash feels human, natural, relatable. I spend time abandoning reality in art. Especially in Pruitt's work I spend hours in awe. While my eyes runs wild throughout the drawing, the subjects body language is strong. She seams comfortable, while her hand placement appear curious and relaxed from my perspective, from another angle her hands are anxious. The woman herself is engulfed in an world of curiosity, or perhaps in a world of conviction and she's ready for action!

Pruitt's work is described as afro futurism. Personally I'm pulled into a childish imagination of Marvels Avengers and X-men watching cartoons on Saturday mornings. Pruitt's characters are typically using black, often women adorned with ideas, other worldly spaces, figurines books, headdress, jewelry and even politically hidden messages like, " MAGNETO WAS RIGHT". The conversation has no landing place, just infinite wonder, suggestions and ideas.

Fun fact: Many believe X-men's Magneto character was a varient of one of our greats leaders Malcom X. Magneto created by Stan Lee @therealstanlee , all of this is so exciting to me! #RobertPruitt #marvelcomics #xmen #magnetowasright #contemporyart

Woman, In Practice | A Conversation 💛💜🌸

Today, this part of our conversation lands differently.

With the news of women being killed by men, I found myself returning to this part of my conversation with Melanie about sisterhood. The real, everyday practice of looking out for one another, of checking-in, noticing, and the practice of not looking away.

I have no neat conclusion for this, I just think we need to keep talking to each other, especially now.

For the women we have lost, the women still here, for all of us. 💛🫂
