On Sunday, September 27, the Minister for Women and Equalities, Bridget Phillipson, said in an interview that she wouldn’t allow trans women into a women’s refuge.

In response, our co-CEOs, Ben Kernighan and Jasmine O’Connor, have said: “If the UK Government’s position is, as the Minister for Women and Equalities, Bridget Phillipson, said on Sunday, that trans women should not be allowed in women’s refuges, then it’s their job to ensure trans+ people have accommodation they can access. Anyone who is escaping abuse and violence deserves a safe place to go. But the Supreme Court Ruling and the EHRC’s updated Code of Practice has put trans+ victims and survivors in a dangerous state of limbo with no clear guidance on what services they can turn to.

“Over the last year, it has been virtually impossible for our frontline services to find anywhere safe for trans+ victims and survivors to go. Despite the fact that trans+ people are at particularly high risk of experiencing abuse and violence. We need direct action now from the UK Government to support trans+ people to find safe accommodation.” by @galopuk

Today is a difficult and painful day for trans+ communities as the updated Equality and Human Rights Commission’s (EHRC) Code of Practice comes into effect. The Code as it stands risks leaving trans+ victims and survivors with less access to support, and more vulnerable to abuse.

Victims and survivors of abuse have told us they are fearful of leaving the house, of using public toilets, and feel less safe living as a trans+ person in the UK. We have seen instances where trans+ people are being challenged and verbally abused when attempting to access toilets in public spaces, such as pubs, and others are experiencing online abuse and death threats.

No one should have to live in fear or face abuse and violence for existing. Galop stands in solidarity with trans+ communities, and we will continue to fight to protect all LGBT+ people from harm. by @galopuk

The UK’s first Independent Hate Crime Advocacy (IHCA) course is intersectional by design. What does that actually mean?

IHCA was created in partnership with Tell MAMA, Community Security Trust, The Monitoring Group Limited, Choice In Hackney, Stay Safe East, Galop and the East European Resource Centre. This groundbreaking course is built from the largest ‘by and for’ knowledge base on hate in the UK.

Each partner contributed their specialist lens to the different strands of hate to create a course which rejects a ‘one size fits all’ approach and leans into intersectionality. This not only creates more dynamic learning but ensures that the IHCA’s completing this qualification are meaningfully person centred and holistic in their approach to advocacy.

We want to ensure all professionals advocating for victims and survivors of hate have the confidence, tools, and knowledge to offer a meaningful and trauma-informed response to the ever-rising levels of hate.

We are devastated by the terrorist attack that took place at Berlin Pride over the weekend. Our hearts are with the victims, their loved ones, and Berlin’s LGBT+ community.

Pride exists as a powerful reminder that our fight to safely and freely live as our true selves is not over. Many in our community will now rightly feel scared in the wake of more hatred and violence. Please know you are not alone.

Galop stands in solidarity and support with Berlin and everyone affected by this awful attack. by @galopuk

Conversion practices take many forms – and they often hide behind other forms of domestic abuse. @galopuk’s new report ‘Still Not Illegal’ analyses case note data from almost 200 recent Galop clients over the past 3 years, providing essential and previously lacking insight into the patterns of conversion practices, where and how they can occur, and the implications for the UK government, victims’ services and professionals.

If you are experiencing conversion practices or domestic abuse in any form, you are not alone. To all LGBTIQ+ survivors of domestic abuse, Refuge is here for you on 0808 2000 247.

The people whose stories are shared in our new report, #StillNotIllegal, could have been protected. But they were failed.

Current UK law does not adequately recognise the nuanced and insidious nature of conversion practices. That's why we urgently need a comprehensive ban which addresses the full scope of the distinct harms this abuse causes.

Conversion practices should be illegal. We will keep fighting for a fully inclusive ban with no loopholes. And we'll continue to be here for anyone who experiences, or is worried about, these abusive practices.
