In the early hours of Friday morning, we picked our first Sauvignon Blanc of the season. Clusters came off the vine and into the bins as tractor lights moved through the rows. By sunrise, the morning’s fruit was already on its way.

There are months of farming behind a morning like this, and an entire vintage still ahead of us.

One small lot changed the way we looked at Oakville.

In 2019, Tom set aside a parcel of estate-grown Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon for a special bottling. Rather than center the wine on an individual vineyard, he wanted to explore a broader expression of the appellation.

That wine became Lot One. It captured the character of the 2019 vintage while opening a new direction for our winemaking. The idea would eventually lead to the Gamble Estates Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon we make today.

Six years later, Lot One is drinking beautifully and remains an important part of our story.

This is Bottle.

He was orphaned at birth and bottle-fed by the people who helped save his life. He grew up alongside the herd, but apparently never got the memo that he was supposed to stop hanging out with the humans.

A lot can happen in a few seconds.

After destemming, our cellar team takes a close look at the grapes as they make their way to the optical sorter. Each berry then passes beneath the cameras, where the criteria set by our winemaking team determine what moves forward.

Thousands of small decisions, made in seconds, before fermentation even begins.

The choices we make here flow all the way to the finished wine.

Fermentation has a way of bringing the grape skins right back to the surface.

This layer, called the cap, is punched back down into the fermenting wine to keep the skins and juice in contact. That contact helps extract color, flavor, and structure as the wine develops.

Harvest can look like a single night’s work. The decision to pick begins months earlier.

Pruning in February. Shoot thinning in the spring. Selective leaf removal through the summer. Then weeks of walking the rows and tasting fruit, watching sugar levels, seed color, and the forecast, and talking with the winemaking team about what the vineyard is telling us.

Eventually, all of those observations lead to a decision. The call is made. The crew arrives after dark.

Months of work in the vineyard. Then, in a matter of hours, the fruit is picked.

Meet the Mt. Veeder vineyard crew.

The goats handle vegetation management. The burro handles security.

They graze their way through grasses and vegetation around the vineyard, helping keep growth under control while the burro stays close and keeps watch.
