Songwriter, singer, and guitar hero Jeremy Pahl gives us this explanation and translation of Gawoo Üüla:

“This song is about the protocols Ts’msyen seal hunters have been passing down forever. I’m lucky enough to have learned about this from my uncles. A long time ago our people communicated with the seal people and made this protocol. The song lyrics themselves are pretty self explanatory. I hunt seals in this way today. It’s a great nutritious and delicious food. I like to render the fat into oil to use for frying fish or mixing with berries as a dessert.”

Songwriter, singer, and guitar maestro Jeremy Pahl on Huk Aat:

“Huk Aat (fisher person) is a song inspired in part by hearing stories about my great grandmother Emily (traditional name: Ts’its’amtii). People said she used to single-hand driftnet fish and pull both the cork and sinker lines herself, and take off the fish, all at once. I took up that style of fishing for salmon in 2021 and have never looked back. I love netting for salmon by hand. Ts’msyen people have been netting fish for millennia, and doing it by hand makes me feel closer to my ancestors.”

We have arrived at the the weekend once again, Friday is here and we close down this weeks spotlight part 5/5 “A Dreamcatcher in Sound: Indigenous Music of North America”

Today’s group is a Canadian fuzz rock power trio hailing from the weed loving province of British Columbia.
Their name translates in to English as “Waterspout” or “Sea Tornado”
They were originally named “Salt Water Hank” until a community elder advised them otherwise;

@gamksimoon - “Gyiin Nax Nox” released in July of 2026 by You’ve Changed Records.

Only 200 pressed originally a very hot title and highly recommended first turned on to this album by Jason Flowers @supremeechorecords

Gamksimoon (Terrace/Prince George) delivered. This rural BC group is now officially my personal fave of 2026.

A heavy rock power trio combining authentic rhythms and melodies inspired by pre-contact Ts’msyen traditions with elements of melodic punk, sung entirely in the Sm’algya̱x language.

Front-man Jeremy Pahl mentioned that there are only 56 people who speak Sm’algya̱x and only two are aged under 70. It is one of the rarest languages in the world. All three members are masters of their instruments, high energy and progressive in their approach.

I’m not done with my celebration of Gamksimoon, on the contrary — just getting started. An incredible group which will hopefully play in Vic sometime. LPs available at the shop and I can’t wait to hear what they do next. Bravo gentlemen.

🎸 Rock out at MOA this Thursday, September 17!

Experience the power of Sm’algy̱ax through the music of G̱a̱mksimoon, a Ts’msyen rock band bringing contemporary sound and ancestral language together in MOA’s Great Hall.

Join us for an electrifying celebration of language revitalization, cultural identity and Indigenous music. 🎶

G̱a̱mksimoon, translating to ‘waterspout’ in Sm’algya̱x, is a rock and roll project created by Wil Uks Batsga G̱a̱laaw (Jeremy Pahl) of the Gitga’at First Nation. Inspired by the powerful and transformative nature of the waterspout, G̱a̱mksimoon’s sound is rooted in pre-contact Ts’msyen rhythms and melodies. By performing entirely in Sm’algya̱x, the project revitalizes the language while crafting music that flows with the force and unpredictability of the natural phenomenon it’s named after.
