Fresh flower season is here! Flower printing by hammering flowers and leaves onto a mordanted fabric is so much fun. My garden is starting to fill in a bit and one by one new flowers are blooming. I love checking the garden each morning to see what has changed and to greet the new blooms. This hammering technique is a wonderful way to capture a snapshot of each year’s garden. 🌼🍃🌸

It’s been a full to the brim last couple of days. Backyard garden is buzzing and Summer workshops closing out with some beautiful locations, big groups, and some lovely people. Flower Pounding, fresh picked bouquets, fresh indigo, and Maxo Vanka murals. Thanks to everyone who joined in and helped make it all happen. Still lots of late summer blooms to collect, press and/or store away for the winter. I’m ready to make a mess in my studio working on some new work this week and to spend some more time in the woods with my pup and my people. ✨ Some Fall workshops will be posted soon-ish! taken in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by @garbella

I’ll be leading a workshop at @bednersgreenhouse on Friday, August 28th, 6-8 pm. Join us to pick your own bouquets from their gorgeous gardens and learn to make your own flower printed pennant wall hanging! I am looking forward to spending an evening outside during golden hour in the gardens with some of you! Thanks to everyone who has taken a workshop or booked a private workshop event with me this summer! Bundle Dyeing, Dye garden starter, Cyanotype, Fresh Indigo, Flower Pounding, Clay Paste Resist + Indigo, Naturally Dyed Basket Weaving… it has been so much fun! I have taught 7 workshops just in the past two weeks and it was so cool to have so many returning participants and familiar faces. I am so grateful for each of you and feel honored when you return for more! I learn so much through teaching and really love it. However, I am definitely ready to have a couple of weeks to keep up with my garden tasks and to have some time to work on some new work! I’m feeling grateful and also a little tired, so I’m going to recharge by making a mess in my studio and working through some new ideas I have. ✨

I wish I had closeups in the daylight of all of the beautiful naturally dyed basket totes made in this workshop! So many beautiful ones, all with unique color palettes and woven shapes + a cool group of dyers and weavers. I love the summer dyeing workshops when we can incorporate fresh indigo!

Indigo! There are SO many kinds of indigo bearing plants around the world (I can’t find the exact number, but anywhere from 300-800 depending on your source!) Japanese Indigo (persicaria tinctoria) grows really well in my zone, but I’m growing 3 different varieties this year. Here’s a snippet of aqueous extraction of pigment from plants grown by @dayzoofarm. They’re growing lots of Japanese Indigo for the first time this year on their farm outside of Pittsburgh and were kind enough to share a harvest with me before they went out of town. Follow along with them if you want to see how they grow and get to know this plant! Thanks, Neil!

Make a cyanotype pennant with me! I hosted a cyanotype workshop at my studio the other night and had one coated pennant left over, so I made one for myself the day after. Of course this doesn’t show every single step or all of the time required as it’s sped up and truncated, but you get the general idea. First, I cut out the fabric, ironed the edges and seems, so it up. Coded it with cyanotype solution and let it dry. Afterwards, I wanted a shift in the depth of shade, so I quickly toned it in a marigold dye bath.

Another super fun naturally dyed basket weaving workshops this week! Thanks to @savidge.baskets for co-teaching with me at my studio and to the lovely group that joined us for a couple of nights this week! It was nice enough to take the indigo vat and iron bucket outside for a bit. I love being in community with craft. Beautiful first baskets! taken in garbella by @garbella
