We had to say goodbye to our best girl, Cinder yesterday. We got to love her for 10 years and are grateful for that, but still wish we had a 100 more. She was the absolute sweetest and such a big, one-of-a-kind weirdo. She was as quirky as she was sweet and she made us smile every single day. She was the best road dog (she visited 35 states and 11 National Parks,) hiking buddy, and garden lounger.

She loved cheese, groundhogs, hiking, sipping and dipping and she really loved us, her pack. When she was excited to eat, she would tap her feet and pounce forward and howl and we called this little show “complimenting the chef.” When she wanted to show you deep affection, she would very gently nibble the tip of your nose. It was the sweetest kindness. She loved the water and would lay down in rivers, ponds, & creeks just about all year long. She would groan over and over for a long time when she was relaxed and liked how you were rubbing her ears; we called this the groan zone. I never ever once heard her growl and she loved little dogs and always let kids touch her big soft ears and pull on her tail. One of her favorite snacks were leaves from sunchokes in our backyard. She always munched on them and honestly it was the only thing she ate on her last day earth side; we’ll keep a patch growing in her memory forever.

We’ll miss her howls, groans, nose nibs, her nose blowing bubbles under water, her compliments to the chef, the way she always backed out of the room, the way she safe spaced on walks, when she looked back at us with a smile on hikes, and 1,000,000 other things. Honestly, we’re absolutely crushed and heartbroken right now, but how lucky were we to have loved her so deeply?! I know it’s worth it to open your heart to a dog, even though it’s terrifying to know that same love will make your heart ache like this one day. We’d do it all over again if we could. Goodbye to our girl with the velvety ears & the sun in her eyes. You’re a good, good girl. The best girl. Love you forever.
