My newest hens have settled in so well. They have formed a sweet little group and are starting to get braver with the main flock. This Dulcie who is blue Sabelpoot. #dulciethebluesabelpoot

Olivia is a paint silkie, she is the youngest and more timid of the three. #oliviathepaintsilkie

Preening and foraging for the Barbu D'Anvers girls a couple of days ago. I adore these tiny hens. There was torrential rain and gusty winds this morning so the flock stayed in their runs. ...... and they're out! Ashley and Darcy are now eight weeks old, so I decided it was time for a little free ranging for them. I am rather cautious with chicks having lost a six weeks old Pekin to presumably a herring gull, in the past. I know that Ashley, the darker of the two is a definite boy, and probably Darcy too. My intention is to keep them regardless unless a problem emerges. A recent devastating loss has meant that we have one less cockerel in the flock now. #minniethecuckoopekin #ashleythesabelpootchick #darcythesabelpootchick #rarebreedpoultry

New accommodation being prepared. Time for the grown up coops! They will move here this evening and spend a few days acclimatising to this end of the garden with Minnie as their guide. I know I only appear to be posting videos of Phyllis at the moment, it isn't deliberate but I couldn't resist this one. We all love to watch chickens drinking but this contrast between Molly and Phyllis together is really sweet. Yes, it is possible to mix breeds of different sizes together if you take time with integration.

A reminder that chickens come in all shapes and sizes. There is such a variety of breeds to discover and support. Steve debating whether he is able to reach those brambles just above his head - obviously thought better of it. I love his low grumbly sounds. The magnificent Phyllis coming through the end of her moult. I honestly thought she had finished laying for the year, but she decided that she would have one last push (literally) with this enormous egg. She typically lays eggs of around 66g, so this is a whopper!

Lots of dramatic changes have happened recently in the flock which has prompted delays in my updates. Some things are just too hard to post.

Being senior hen earns certain privileges. In this case, Mavis is having a private dining experience in the greenhouse. A few sunflower hearts will give her a good boost through her moult which is in full swing at the moment. Will jog, (or fly) for corn.
A late afternoon jog for the flock yesterday,, these moulting girls and boys must be so uncomfortable. I looked back at one of my old posts and realised that I had written that the Sebrights were not integrating with the main flock, when I actually meant to say that they are now integrating! Here they are happily engaged with the others. In other news, OEGB have come through their moult early so are looking good, and Phyllis is nearly there now. My two sabelpoot chicks, who I have named Ashley and Darcy were delighted to be introduced to the joys of calci worms, gifted to me by @the_happy_hen_co
