Annie and her petticoats. She is actually sitting in her personal dust bath, which she has been working on. It is Pekin sized so she looks as if she is floating in a sea of feathers. #anniethebuffcolumbianpekin #moultingseason #freerangechickens

When I asked for hen names, I thought I’d get a couple of dozen suggestions but I ended up with over 500!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to send names. Apart from a couple that couldn’t be used for copyright reasons, every suggestion has found its place in the book. This has become a real community project, and I love that so many of you will be able to find your hen in the finished copy.

A lot of you have been asking what the book is about…

Like many of you, I’ve been fascinated by the The Killer Isn’t… books that have gone viral. I love the idea of solving a mystery, but I realised the execution wasn’t quite for me. The thought of searching through 40,000 names to find the killer would mean that I lost interest pretty quickly.

So I started thinking what if I took the detective element and built something different?

Thirty rare breed hens.

One locked coop.

One dead hen.

Detective Wibbles is on the case. 🐓

When Queenie, a beautiful Westfälische Totleger, is found dead inside the coop, everyone assumes it was a tragic accident…

…but Wibbles isn’t convinced.

Your job is to work alongside him, eliminating the 30 chicken suspects one by one until only the killer remains.

As you investigate, you can access detailed Breed Files, learning about the history and characteristics of the rare breeds which can help you discount the suspects. You don’t need to know anything about chickens before you start as everything you need to solve the mystery is hidden within the book.

At the back of the book is a Hen Ledger containing over 1,000 named hens, including every usable name suggested by this community. It’s there as a record of the flock, not another puzzle to solve but you’ll be able to find the hen you helped name while crossing suspects off until only one is left.

It’s part murder mystery, part logic puzzle and part rare breed guide. It’s a bit different - and probably a bit mad which is why I wanted to write it.

I still have plenty to do, but I can’t wait to share more with you over the coming months.

And thank you again for helping bring this flock to life 💖

HELP!
I’m writing a chicken book (with a difference) and I need LOTS of names. Hit me with the name of your favourite hen and I’ll see that she features! Would make a perfect stocking filler or Secret Santa 🎅🏼
EDIT PLEASE SHARE THE BREED TOO 🙏
