Meet our artist-in-residence Gareth Byrne from Ireland!

Gareth: I work with analogue and digital moving image, often collaborating with local musicians and dancers. I'm interested in the poetics of landscape and in transforming images through processes of breakdown and reconstruction. At BAL, I'm exploring how photochemical techniques can shape new moving-image work.

🎥Describe your creative process in three words: Curious, structural, rhythmic.

🎥Name one exciting thing about being here in Riga, in BAL residency: Riga has a special place in my heart, so it's a joy to be back. I've been to BAL many times, and I really value the sense of community here.

The music video I shot and directed for my friends in Opal for their track Better Look Up was released last week.

I shot on 16mm with a clockwork Bolex H16 and entirely hand-developed at home, including contact printing and solarisation seperately in the darkroom. It was the first big project I’d completed entirely by hand, and I really wanted to challenge myself to take it all the way from shooting through to developing, printing and transforming the footage myself.

The title Better Look Up got me thinking about how much we miss when our attention is constantly pulled towards technology, and how easily something happening above us could go unnoticed. I started working with the physical material of old encyclopaedias, shooting illustrations of space, eclipses and apocalyptic imagery up close. I liked the idea of taking these familiar, printed images and transforming them through the physical process of making the film, distorting something that already existed and making it feel unfamiliar again.

Then I found out there was an actual solar eclipse happening around the same time of the release, which I hadn’t known when I started making the film, which was a fun coincidence by @garethcid
