As the work developed, I wanted to look less at the action or individual culture of gambling/the lottery itself, but more at the concept of the dream that is constructed in consumer culture and advertisement. Or how culture is run by the fantasy of marketing and advertising functions on a very banal, everyday level. I wanted to analyse the tropes and clichés that are proliferated throughout visual culture, while also engaging and creating new narratives by using advertorial images that already existed in both print and digital media and re-construct these images to find new meaning.

I was particularly influenced by Jean Baudrillard’s postmodernist ideas of simulation and hyperreal.

Hi, my name is Gareth Byrne and I am a visual artist & filmmaker from Dublin.

My artwork generally is influenced by my lived experience growing up in a working-class suburb of North Dublin. My work generally explores modern life, pop culture & everyday mundanities in the socio-capitalist sphere as well as taking on more familial and personal themes at times. Aesthetically I am interested in photography that is graphically influenced & the circulation of imagery in both print & digital media.

Over the coming days, I will be talking to you about the ideas behind my current project entitled ‘It Could Be You’. The project is an experimental image-making project that aims to visually explore both capitalist influences on society & the concept of the ‘dream’ that is sold in both traditional & lotto advertisements.

The project at its inception was subsequently influenced by my lived experience in North Dublin and traditional documentary & point-and-shoot photography. I’ve always been intrigued by different ideas of gambling and I was initially attempting to show everyday mundanities & make social commentary on suburban working life from a particular lens. In a sense, it was a reflection of how we spend our time waiting, wishing for something to change from the rudimentary by feverishly dreaming of something more.

While this approach worked initially, I wanted to expand by the project scope by exploring different visual methodologies

Using found imagery from both lotto and traditional advertisements, I aimed to re-contextualise tropes of ‘the dream’ that are circulated in print and television media, which continue to idealise instant and immediate gratification as well as idealised self-indulgence.

Paradise, the house on the green, and sipping cocktails by the pool are all part of the proliferation of images we see time and time again in this creation of the dream. While a mishmash of numeric probability stands in the way of a less mundane livelihood.

What effect do these images have on a society’s desire for more? Do these images with no invitation make us as individuals dream of a life more desirable or is the one we currently live enough?

We continue to introduce this year’s RADAR recipients, with Gareth Byrne from the National College of Art and Design (CEAD).

‘It Could Be You’ is a visual exploration of how our modern capitalist ideals leave working people captive in a time economy that sees leisure as a threat to prosperity, leaving individuals to dream about inheritances, jackpots, and winning at the races. The project aims to examine these ideas through fly on the wall documentary photography and combines and contrasts reconstructed images from a variety of lottery and gambling advertisements using 35mm macro photography. The project has been displayed in a zine format.
