ARTIST TALK 16/08/2026 14.00hrs

I am going to give an informal talk about my exhibition THIS COULD BE TEXAS at @thestonespace on Sunday 16th August at 2pm. This is a free event and everyone is welcome - no need to book, just turn up. As well as talking about the work in the exhibition, I will bring along some extra related artworks to show you that aren’t in the show.

Exhibition runs until 23rd August

The exhibition will consist of an installation created with paintings, sculpture and neon. It will be viewable from the street through the front glass facade and will be lit 24/7. The space itself will be open Sat 1st August 10.00-16.00 and Sun 2nd August 12.00-16.00 and I will be there invigilating and talking to visitors. I will also have the space open at other times tbc and by appointment. Please also come at anytime to view the installation through the window.

Join us for the unveiling of a new large-scale mural by Gareth Kemp in the courtyard alongside an accompanying exhibition of related paintings in the gallery.

Sculptural Forms in a Liminal Space is an 460cm x 625cm mural painted on a brick wall in the courtyard of the Bridewell studios and Gallery. In the adjoining gallery there will be a small exhibition of related paintings made over the past 5 years.

Sculptural Forms in a Liminal Space
These sculptural forms emerged through a number of paintings inspired by Judd’s 15 Untitled Works in Concrete that I saw in Marfa in 2018. I had painted the sculptural forms again and again, simplifying and intensifying them, flattening them and removing the 3D-ness. I then made a 3D sculpture based on the form, photographed it and based this painting on that. The title makes light-hearted reference to New York Art Critic, Jerry Saltz’s book in which he warns artists against using terms like interrogate, reconceptualize, commodity culture and liminal space.

I have 4 paintings selected for the Wrexham Painting Prize @wrexhampaintingprize which opened yesterday. I am very pleased to announce that my painting The Ravages of the Axe No. VI won the materials prize sponsored by Michael Harding Paints @mhpaints

It was great to see so many artist friends old and new at the private view and lots of great paintings. Special thanks to @matthewmacaulaypaints who organises the Wrexham Painting Prize for all his hard work.

1 week to go! Join us for an exciting evening celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bridewell Studios with our most ambitious exhibition ever - and a book launch too! All are welcome.

Preview & Book Launch / Fri June 5th / 6 - 9pm

To mark the 50th anniversary of Bridewell Studios Liverpool there will be a free exhibition of paintings, photographs, and videos based around the work produced by Maurice Cockrill RA during his time at the Bridewell from 1978-1982. There will also be a publication to accompany the exhibition and anniversary.
