Everybody should have a few favourite places. Places that reset you. And often it is the people there who fuel that. In Toronto, no question that @sorrel_restaurant is one of those places. In #Miami, @macsclubdeuce is another. Empty of gold and glitter, the walls and counters are instead packed with stories and scratched paint. A deep multilayered finish of life itself. I sit at the counter with friends and feel there is nothing but the bare essentials, counter neighbours who give you unvarnished moments of their life. And many are absolutely fantastic. Cancer doesn't wait for an invitation. I'm asking you to accept this one.

Give this luncheon your time, and I promise you a conversation that will challenge how you think about cancer-and how early we might be able to change its course.

I campaigned for Empire Club of Canada to host this discussion. I have a rare and aggressive cancer. For me, the urgency is personal. It you are a cancer patient, you should be here.

What if we could find more cancers before symptoms appear? Before they spread? What would it take to prevent some from developing at all?

Those questions are at the heart of #StageZero: The Future of Cancer Detection and Prevention.
On October 22, we'll hear from people working at the forefront of that future. The best on the planet.

I’m incredibly proud to share that I’ve joined the Cabinet of @thepmcf’s #CarryTheFire campaign — a $2.5 billion effort to change what is possible in cancer early detection, treatment (the end of chemotherapy!) and care.

For me, this is deeply personal.

My father died of cancer. His father died of cancer. His sister died of cancer.
And now, I have cancer.

I have salivary duct carcinoma — a rare, aggressive cancer that is often extremely difficult to beat. An almost nine-hour surgery, including a radical neck dissection, followed by nearly two months of radiation and extraordinary care at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre saved my life.

And I am counting on what comes next.

In 23 months, I will have lived longer than the last two generations of my father’s family.

That sentence carries a lot for me. It is about loss, but it is also about how far we have come — and about what might be possible for the generations that follow.

But breakthroughs don’t happen by themselves. They need investment, imagination, researchers willing to pursue the seemingly impossible, and institutions capable of turning discovery into care.

That is what #CarryTheFire is about. I’m honoured to be part of this campaign. Not just because I believe in its mission, but because I know, personally, what is at stake.
