It’s always the best part of our jobs to get to use our experience to try and help guide the next generation of young creative entrepreneurs on their journeys. Yesterday we had the great pleasure of presenting a masterclass on getting a cohort of super exciting makers on the road to being exhibition-ready.

Thanks to @transmedia_studios and @gautengdepartmentofsportsartsandculture for inviting us, and hosting such a wonderful initiative. Being at the Jabulani Safe Hub in Soweto was such an inspiring example of how different departments can come together to make safe spaces for these sorts of moments. Well done to everyone involved!

Maison & Objet came to a triumphant close yesterday, and while Paris Design Week continues, we’ve left feeling so inspired by the incredible community of designers, makers and organisers who found a way to make this an event that celebrates design, above all else.

From the monumental work of @uchronia_world / an inspiring next generation of Polish designers presented by the @visteria.foundation / the expressiveness of @masquespacio_ana at @maisonetobjet / a private tour of @le__corbusier apartment at Molitor and the launch of @steinwayandsons new collab with @atelierpaelis - we were blown away by the level of the exhibitions, and attention to detail by each participant.

Part two coming up next, but for now make sure to add Maison to your design calendar, it’s a wonder 😍😍😍 taken in Paris, France by @garrethdavid

@maisonetobjet is officially underway, and this year South Africa is firmly in the spotlight with the launch of the Rising Talent Awards South Africa.

Seven designers, @meetlo_studios, @simphiwem1, @studio_lloyd, @deft.studios, @karlien_vanrooyen, @nish___design and @pindadesign, are representing a new generation of South African design on one of the world’s most important international design stages.

Last night, the Rising Talent space came alive as the designers, South African jury, Maison&Objet team and international design community gathered to celebrate their work, with speeches, two special awards presented on the night, and a real sense of South Africa taking its place on the global design stage.

The Rising Talent Awards South Africa forms part of an ongoing partnership between Maison&Objet, @decorexafrica and @100percentdesignafrica , creating new opportunities to connect South African design talent with international audiences, platforms and opportunities.

Decorex Africa and 100% Design Africa Executive Creative Directors @garrethdavid and @alanjohnhayward are in Paris for the launch and will be taking us through Maison&Objet and Paris Design Week over the coming days.

We’ll be sharing more of what caught our eye, who we met and, most importantly, the South African designers making their mark in Paris.

More from Maison&Objet soon. 🇿🇦 by @garrethdavid

PARIS, STOP TWO: PARIS DESIGN WEEK

Paris Design Week is officially open!

We began at the opening preview of Factory, where emerging designers from around the world are presenting new work across a series of spaces in the Marais.

From there, the city became part of the experience. Moving between exhibitions, streets, historic buildings and some of Paris’s most familiar landmarks is a reminder of what makes a city-wide design week so exciting. The journey between each stop becomes part of the show.

Next stop: Maison&Objet. taken in Paris, France by @garrethdavid

C’est Bon! Paris Design Week hasn’t even started properly and it’s already just so, so good. We’ve been busy being tourists - a warmup, if you will - but tomorrow evening the festivities begin, and we’ll be here just dragging you through all the best bits.

Here’s what to expect:
- Wednesday // PDW kicks off: Tomorrow evening we’ll preview the best bits of the official Paris Design Week programme at four incredible historic venues.

- Thursday // Maison opens: Seven extraordinary South African Designers take the spotlight at this year’s @maisonetobjet but before that we’ll be visiting some legendary apartments and spaces en route to the big show, and the Maison & Objet Rising Talent awards ceremony, this year in partnership with @decorexafrica

- Friday, Saturday, Sunday // Paris Design Extravaganza: buckle in because we’re basically running the Paris Design marathon but this time we’ve pulled in reinforcements so keep an eye on the Decorex Africa and @100percentdesignafrica pages where all the fabulous South African design folk who are here with us will be sharing the fair from their POVs 🌼 taken in Paris, France by @garrethdavid

PARIS, FIRST STOP: SHOPPE OBJECT

We’ve arrived in Paris for a week of design, discovery and a very exciting moment for South African creativity.

Before Maison&Objet and Paris Design Week get underway, we headed to Shoppe Object Paris, presented within Who’s Next at Porte de Versailles.

While it isn’t officially part of Paris Design Week, an exciting mix of South African brands were showing in Paris through the Craft and Design Institute and SAFLEC, the South African Footwear and Leather Export Council, with the support of the dtic.

Over the coming days, the Decorex Africa team will be taking you inside Maison&Objet, following South Africa’s seven Rising Talents and exploring exhibitions, installations and ideas across Paris Design Week.

Follow along as we bring you the highlights from South African design’s big week in France. taken in Paris, France by @garrethdavid

A note to say thank you, and for all the belief ❤️

Image: @trevor_stuurman

A fair like Decorex, the continent’s largest and longest-running event of its kind, requires a great deal of belief, and quite a lot of make-believe.

There is the belief that thousands of moving parts can come together from across this enormous continent. That ideas can become rooms, drawings can become buildings, and materials, objects and people can travel vast distances to meet under one roof.

Somewhere among the damasks, marble samples, lighting installations, deliveries and many stories woven between more than 400 exhibitors and 50 000 visitors each year, something else takes shape.

Not simply an exhibition, but a collective act of imagination. A temporary world where we start to dream about what we value and who we might become next.

There are, inevitably, days in the lead-up when belief becomes difficult. Shipments are delayed. Colour palettes flop. Walls are built in the wrong place. Floor plans, traffic departments and fire regulations begin to occupy every available corner of the mind.

Then the doors open.

Suddenly, the fair is seen through the eyes of the people who come back each year to encounter something new. The halls change, the light shift and the feeling becomes something else altogether. For four days, we begin to reimagie.

This year, that act of reimagining took place through the lens of The Soft Life: a theme for a life shaped less by endurance and more by intention, with space for pleasure, rest, beauty, ritual and care.

To every exhibitor, designer, maker, partner, speaker, builder, supplier, team member and visitor who believed in this year’s Decorex Africa, thank you.

A fair is partly real and partly imagined. For a few days, an empty convention centre becomes a city of ideas. Then thousands of people walk through its doors and, simply by being there, make that world real.

Karoo days with my Garreth, our dogs, and the most incredible friends.

Thank you Cornel and Neil for opening up this beautiful place and making it all feel so warm, generous and completely unforgettable. Pink Hill Karoo, you are a little slice of heaven.

Few things are quite so magical as the Karoo in wintertime. Even fewer places are quite so special to experience the wonder of it all at @nagtegaalsfontein - a dream brought to life by the visionary @cornel_strydom

As we breathe and collect ourselves before the rush of Joburg Decorex at the end of the month, we couldn’t be more grateful for the time to reconnect, dream and fall back into the pillows with our babies, and my best @jonowoodinjozi who we have missed way too much.

Today we head to the annual @karoo_winter_wool_festival where we will be immersed into the all new Karoo Kraal experience by @viviers.studio & @hovendesign - so excited to be inspired by this beautiful community again.
