Our first stop in Milan? @atelierdetroupe in Brera.

Only a few hours after arriving in the city for Milan Design Week we made our way to Atelier de Troupe’s exhibition for their showing. Titled Intermezzo, the intimate show is a collaboration with @studioette and @cc_tapis . Hidden behind a discreet doorway — as is often the case in the magic of Milan — the installation reveals itself slowly: quiet, atmospheric, and ephemeral all at once.

Atelier de Troupe, based in Los Angeles, is known for its sculptural lighting and furniture that often draws from cinematic and architectural references. This new body of work continues in that spirit — a space between scenes, exploring contrast and pause, weight and softness. It’s all somehow still quite hollywood, with the blonde lights shining, and smoke machine blowing.

The collaboration with Studioutte in Paris and the textile specialists at cc-tapis brings the collaboration a little closer to home. Materially lacquered woods, alpaca, pony hair, velvet, and mohair also plays on this feeling of an inbetween space, everything a little temporary and timeless — a kind of visual interlude.

It’s an inspiring way to begin the week: thoughtful design, meaningful collaboration, and a reminder of how powerful design can be, without saying much at all.

Modern meets old-school in the building’s corridor, with the sleek golden elevator and bygone flooring hinting at what’s to come behind the closed apartment doors.

Amit Nanoo and Russell Fisher’s modern Joburg apartment has been renovated into a beautifully bright and airy home, offering a great space for the couple to entertain.

Marble in various shapes, sizes and colours is found throughout Amit Nanoo and Russell Fisher’s space — for Amit, marble is like an ode to time. Noteworthy here is his clever use of matching the two-toned marble divide with the horizontal curtain line.

The custom-designed bent steel and velvet couch seen in this Johannesburg apartment’s lounge is inspired by modernist architectural forms. Designed by homeowner, Amit Nanoo, it incorporates a ‘side for Russell’, his partner, who prefers a couch that’s upright, with the other side lower, for Amit to lounge in perfect horizontal bliss. Murano glass vessels sit atop a Carrara marble coffee table, overlooking Killarney.

‘Every decision has been made with the view in mind’, say homeowners Amit Nanoo and Russell Fisher. Elegantly posing for a family portrait, with their beloved cat, Joey, for whom they say they would give up all the marble in the world to see again, as Joey sadly passed away subsequent to this shoot.

Explore more of this open-plan Killarney home on p120 of Vol. 4 : Build, which is available now both online and on shelves nationwide.
