Serpentine Are Probably My Favorite Exercise!!!

Serpentines at the trot are one of the best exercises you can do with a horse because they develop suppleness, balance, responsiveness, and engagement of the hindquarters. For the kind of all-around horsemanship and English work you do at Salt N’ Hay, they can be especially useful for improving a horse's body control and connection with the rider.

Teaching the students that turning is not from your hands, its from your body and legs. Look how much I can make my horse move with very little effort.

Meet Stella..... she is our most colorful and loves to move horse. But as soon as you put a kid on her back, she puts her super mom cape on and changes tone.

Its amazing being able to work with these amazing animals and kids, to hopefully inspire the next generation of horse men and women.

A Little Look & Learn 🐴

One thing I love about teaching is that I don’t just tell kids what to do—I love to show them.

Today I was riding Tonto, our Mustang, to demonstrate softness and how I use my hands, legs, seat and feet together to communicate with him.

I was showing the kids how to make small adjustments, turn him, and ask for softness without forcing him.

Sometimes the best lesson isn’t sitting in the saddle yourself. Sometimes it’s watching someone else ride and being able to see exactly what they’re asking the horse to do.

That’s what I love about horsemanship—learning to communicate with the horse instead of just telling the horse what to do. ❤️🐴
