Serpentine Are Probably My Favorite Exercise!!!

Serpentines at the trot are one of the best exercises you can do with a horse because they develop suppleness, balance, responsiveness, and engagement of the hindquarters. For the kind of all-around horsemanship and English work you do at Salt N’ Hay, they can be especially useful for improving a horse's body control and connection with the rider.

Teaching the students that turning is not from your hands, its from your body and legs. Look how much I can make my horse move with very little effort.

Today was a great day for Dawn and her horses. Dawn is a weekly client of mine, and I help her work with her four beautiful adopted horses. With little riding experience, she's taken on the challenge of caring for horses with health issues, past trauma, and a lack of respect for people.

She's learning that respect isn't earned through force—it's built through trust, consistency, and understanding. One of them is still more interested in eating grass than anything else 🤣🤷‍♂️.

It's been amazing watching their progress and seeing the bond they're building together.

Worked with a new horse today that came from the English jumper world. I never even got on him — today was about groundwork, trust, and learning how he responds to pressure.

He got super spooky with the flag and was very reactive to the stick and string. Every movement felt big to him. But moments like that tell you a lot about a horse. Not every horse that reacts is being difficult — sometimes they’re just unsure, overwhelmed, or trying to figure out what the right answer is.

We’re not trying to make him into some finished western ranch competition horse overnight. The goal is confidence first. Helping him slow his mind down, relax, and realize pressure doesn’t always mean panic.

Some horses need miles. Some need patience. Most need both.

The smallest wins matter — one deep breath, one soft step, one moment of trying instead of reacting. That’s where you start building a better horse. 🐎

Basic Ground Driving Class

She was a little unsure at first, but with some guidance, she found her rhythm—moving the horse forward, changing direction, and bringing her to a stop with confidence. By the end, you could see the pride all over her face.

At Salt N' Hay Equestrian, confidence is our biggest goal—not just for the horse, but for every person behind the lines, no matter their experience level.

You don’t have to ride to build a connection with a horse.

There’s something powerful about learning to communicate, to trust, and to grow together.
Horses need us—and truth is, we need them too.
Good for the soul.

“In the moment of teaching, a connection forms between the student and the teacher. By the end, when the goal is achieved, that connection turns into a shared sense of pride and trust. It’s through these moments that we truly grow and develop into better riders and horse owners.”

Some of my favorite days look just like this…
just me and my girl, watching the man we love do what he’s called to do 🤍

She may be little, but she’s already growing up in a world full of grit, passion, and horses… and I wouldn’t have it any other way 🐴✨

These are the moments I’ll never forget.

That smile? 100% earned.
Her horse came in as the “problem child”—wouldn’t even think about crossing the tarp. We got a couple tries in together before time ran out, so I left her with a plan and some tools to keep working.

Two hours later… she did it. 💥

I’m beyond proud—not just of her, but of all these riders who showed up saying their horses were scared of everything… wind, trees, flowers, bags. And now? They’re crossing tarps, going under drones, and even dancing with the tube man.

Confidence isn’t given—it’s built, one step at a time.
We host Barn Party Desensitization Clinics so you and your crew can grow, push limits, and actually have fun doing it. 💪🐎🧨🎈🥳
