Painting a forest one tree at a time
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It’s October! Spooky Season! My favorite time of year! It’s one of the few times of year where I feel normal. Normally, I’d have a big painting a day project for this month. But, I’m doing something a bit different this year. I’ve still got a big project, but I’m giving it space, so I don’t burn myself out and can take time to enjoy this time of year. When I was but a tiny Gary, my mother would read to me from an old German book. As is the norm with antiquated German children’s stories, it was filled with tales of (mostly) misbehaving children suffering as a result of their misdeeds. That book was Der Struwwelpeter, written and illustrated by Heinrich Hoffman in 1845. I’m not sure how many of those lessons I really learned; I still ended up playing with matches, hated combing my hair, and never really cared for soup. But, the dark humor and fun, sometimes grisly, illustrations had a big impact on me during my formative years. I’ve always thought of doing my own take on the book. And now, I’ve decided to take it on! Starting, obviously, with the cover and title story, Struwwelpeter. Also, thanks to my wonderful mother, I’ve got a brand new english translation of the book that skews a bit closer to the original text than the others I’ve encountered. So, big thanks to her for that! My plan is to do 10 of the 11 original stories. I’m skipping out on one for fairly obvious reasons, but I can talk about that later. Once all the stories are done, assuming the response is positive enough, I’d like to run a small kickstarter to get some books printed up. We’ll see how things go! I won’t be making the originals available until the whole book is done. But, I will have prints available as each new piece is completed. As always, thanks to all of you for following along, I appreciate all of you! #art #watercolor #watercolour #painting #landscape #spooky #dark #moody #witchy #goth #timelapse #tutorial #vegasartist #vegasart #metal #watercolortutorial #darkart #struwwelpeter #childrensbooks #fairytale taken in Las Vegas, Nevada by @garykcadima

Hey folks! So here’s a slower, commentated look at the process of painting one of my recent pieces. It’s very off the cuff, and I don’t consider myself a very good speaker. But, maybe some of you can take something helpful away from this. Thank you all so much for watching, and let me know what you think or if you have any questions!
