Great to be back at Chez Foillard, this time with Alex Foillard. A transition is underway at the domaine, with Alex now making the Jean Foillard wines alongside his own wines from Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly, as well as his Beaujolais-Villages. Superb wines across the board.

His Brouilly 2019 was spicy and lifted, with loads of freshness. Gorgeous. They’ve also started making a white cuvée (Chardonnay), beginning with the 2023 vintage — still a work in progress.

Five years after walking away from one of his first culinary loves, Gökhan returned to Asador Etxebarri. The fire still burned. The anchovies still sang. The txuleta may have been the best he had tasted there. And this time, the wine list finally matched the grill: thoughtful, balanced, quietly brilliant.

Gorgeous Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo — or Spanna, as it’s called there — with a small amount of Vespolina. Boca is the northernmost appellation in Piemonte, producing highly aromatic, earthy, elegant and long-lived wines.

Some wines chase their moment. Others are made to outlast it.

In Haro, López de Heredia has spent more than a century doing exactly that, making wine at its own pace, guided by continuity rather than fashion. While Rioja chased modernity, this family stayed put: farming old vines, ageing wines for years underground, releasing them only when time had done its work. What once felt out of step now reads as foresight.

This piece is a walk through cellars where history (and lots of spiders) still breathes and a reminder that in wine, as in life, the long view often tells the clearest story.
