“Japan is like another planet.”

It is one of the oldest clichés about Japan. Yet perhaps the most fascinating thing is not the comparison itself, but how often it has been made. In the nineteenth century, the Victorian traveller Isabella Bird described Japan as feeling like “an excursion to another planet.” More than a century later, arriving in Kyoto for the first time, @besim_hatinoglu found himself reaching for exactly the same words.

How can two travellers, separated by more than a century, arrive at the same conclusion?

Some wines chase their moment. Others are made to outlast it.

In Haro, López de Heredia has spent more than a century doing exactly that, making wine at its own pace, guided by continuity rather than fashion. While Rioja chased modernity, this family stayed put: farming old vines, ageing wines for years underground, releasing them only when time had done its work. What once felt out of step now reads as foresight.

This piece is a walk through cellars where history (and lots of spiders) still breathes and a reminder that in wine, as in life, the long view often tells the clearest story.

There is a certain kind of work that tells you more about a place than any guidebook ever could.

I arrived in the small town of Yoichi in Hokkaido after weeks of darting across Japan, worn thin by cities, trains, and the feeling of never quite catching up. And then Takahiko Soga appeared: no big introductions, no performance, just someone who moves through his craft with complete clarity of purpose. His wines are not built around the usual vocabulary of Western winemaking. They grow out of the same principles that shape Japanese cuisine.

The article traces how that approach shaped Yoichi’s identity and influenced a whole generation of Hokkaido producers.

Last week, the launch of Mizanplas took place at vitruta Pera, bringing together the editorial team and our Good People of vitruta community in the warm, layered atmosphere of Istanbul.
