I don't receive many commissions for full blown western styles but I never say no. It is always fun.
A 230gr Nutria felt, 4 1/4" brim, 5" crown, cattlemen creasing. We chose the white silk for the liner as it provided great contrast to all the blackness. by @gaultrobert

It has been a busy week in the shop. Here is the final result on those two hats requiring major restoration. The first one, a Serratelli felt came back to like new condition save for a few weak spots due to wear in the crown. I am impressed by the felt quality.
The second hat, an Outback is a wool felt and was very hard to work with. It restored just OK but given the dire condition it was in, then OK is acceptable. by @gaultrobert

Here is a fun test. 4 photos. First two are the two restored hats along with a brand new hat ready to be creased. The last two pics are the hats when I received them. Can you tell me which of the 3 hats in the picture is the brand new one? by @gaultrobert

Picked up these two Winchester 100% beaverbelly felts. I have worked with their beaver/mink and the Husst beaver/chinchilla but this will be first beaver belly felt. Western weight, with huge brims. One will be for me but the other is up for grabs. Shoot me a message if interested in a custom hat in 100%beaver belly felt.

Here are some progress pictures of those two very dirty hats I am restoring. The hat on the left will come out in almost like new condition. The hat on the right is wearable but rough. The felt was not great to begin with. But, I did manage to repair the large hole at the pinch. You can see the lines along the crease ridge. That area is worn almost through. I reinforced the back side to stop the spread. Next step is some shellac to restore some structure to the worn felt, new liners and sweats and ready for another decade or two of wear. by @gaultrobert

I have made progress on restoration of the two hats. Cleaned and blocked although I will do a bit more plus a thorough luring of the felt before I am finished. The larger brimmed western has to be upsized two full sizes and I was concerned as the felt was very weak on the crown top. My concern was tearing the felt on the blocking. I decided to block up in stages, first to 58cm, then a 59cm and tomorrow I will do the final block to a 60cm. So far so good. I still have the challenge of reparing the large crown hole in the second hat. by @gaultrobert

This week I have a fellow in from the east coast to study hat making for the next 4 days. Our first day, first order was blocking these 3 felts. Husst rabbit in black, Husst beaver in pecan and a FEPSA, oxblood in a 50/50 blend. We covered a lot today, pouncing, leather sweat bands, proper fitting of a hat. A good day all around.. by @gaultrobert

I have just taken on the restoration of these two hats and they are my biggest challenge yet. They belonged to a lady's recently deceased father. A rancher that always had a hat on his head. They buried him with his favourite and she wants these two restored and sized to fit her sons. This is my biggest challenge.....ever! by @gaultrobert

This is likely the most unusual commission I have undertaken. Client wanted a Cavalier or Three Muskateer's style hat.
Winchester western weight rabbit in Steel grey. Big proportions, Almost a 5" brim on a 62.5cm size hat.
Leather band on the crown. I insert leather thongs into the band so the feather is held in place but also can be removed. Hat will be worn at an upcoming Renaissance Faire this autumn. by @gaultrobert

I delivered the hat to the young fellow this morning. He loves it. As a bonus their new kitten loved the hat box so now I have to get the kitten one of his own.....a box, not the hat. by @gaultrobert

Here is Part 2 of my experiment in making child sized hats without child sized equipment. Part 1 was the Panama straw in a size 48cm.
Here is Part 2 in a Winchester, mid weight beaver felt, in a fawn colour, size 51cm.
1/2" pencil curl, slight Packer dip, front and back. Leather strap with 2 braided leather strips, top and bottom. A Longhorn steer concho to add to the western vibe. by @gaultrobert
