Almost 2 years since my last post. It might be time to post something again. And that shot is even older. (April 2019). Not my best BTS picture… but I do like the result of this.
It’s so simple but efficient, playing with such low levels, with natural light through a CTS in the back ground and a Litemat 4 at the top. 👌

This was taken on a short movie called Sledgehammer.

NYX bulb fire! I haven’t posted anything in a while and I wanted to share this small effect to show one of the multiple use of the @asteraofficial NYX bulbs.
In this, they are doing some great ambers! We had them on a slight fire effect to add some flicker to the image.
I have seen someone before doing it by burring an S30, but I must say this was much easier and the result was very satisfying.
The moon light was done by an S360 on a Silver Long John and another NYX inside a Jem ball. All of that running on a Moviequiet 6KWH lithium battery for the night.

Here is a picture from a short movie I gaffed recently.
The idea in this scene was to get a fill everywhere very blue and to key with tungsten.
We have 1 SkyPanel in each corner of the room, facing up to bounce off the white ceiling. All on wireless DMX with @luminair.app.
Then we used a 100W bulb in the practical that we reinforced with an SkyPanel S60 with chimera/grid.

Back lit only. I wonder how this would have looked if we had been shooting with a 5d mark II like every music video were only 8 years ago. 1 SkyPanel and a Celeb 201 in the back ground. A bit of neg beside camera and that’s it. I feel like with this, a Mark II would have had nothing at the front and especially with the neg and we would have probably had to add a bounce on camera side. So in the end that extra dynamic range we have with our camera Alexa and in this case URSA is a good thing (makes us save a bounce) but also makes it harder to create contrast in a white room (makes use a neg). Only 2 years ago if you had said. I shot that with no LED lights, it would have been the most normal thing, but now it’s different, it already became almost vintage to do it.
There are lot of debates, about the spectrum of color of a tungsten versus LED that I understand but my knowledge in colouring aren’t advanced enough to have a real opinion on it. In here what is interesting for us is more the source itself, it’s shape, and it’s punch.
So on this shoot we decided to shoot only tungsten which I haven’t done in a while and I have to say it felt good.
2 750, one on the other side of the axe going through a light grid, the other one extending that wrap around on the axe same side on a bounce. Cut it off the wall and that’s it! (We did add sometimes a high light in front.) Shot with URSA 4K version 1 with sigma 24/70 2.8

Super soft if what you need!
When the subject is sensitive, nothing better than a very large soft source to show people at there best advantage.
In this case we have a book light made with an M40 to a 12x12 ultrabouce to a full grid. And a bounce on the other side. Creating that super soft beam without hitting the background.

One light, to hit the right spot. Putting an M18 on a fully cranked up 5k wind up doesn’t make me feel too good, and adding a extension makes me feel even worst. But sometime you need to hit that sweet spot for it to work. But in this case I was lucky, the weather was great no wind at all, didn’t even need to anchor the stand and I think we did hit that sweet spot we were looking for. And all this wouldn’t have been possible without proper location scout.
This is from a short movie that I gaffed call: Song my mother taught me.
We also had a bounce on the left side camera to bump up the level just slightly on her face.
This was shot on Alexa Amira with super speed.

Thank to the massive help of our key grip Doug Reid we made that perfect soft box with 4 SkyPanel S60, going through a Litegrid. Everything on Luminair.
There is also 4 Source 4 LED Lustr. These are really great and gave us those perfect beams through the cases at the back ground.

I’m always a big fan of diffusion and egg crates a good combo of soft and directional. In this case we have 2 SkyPanel going through the frame on the left with a full grid and the egg crate. At the top we have a SkyPanel in the spacelight and an Arri L7 for the back light.

Lit with 5 4’ quasar xfade and 2 8’. We also had an M18 bouncing in the corner right side camera and a SkyPanel on paparazzi effect on the left.
This rig took us quite a while but was pretty worth it!

Another very simple and efficient set up but this time with Litmate 4 with a full diffusion. We still needed to skirt the fixture, because the grid was cutting out too much light.
There is also an 8x8 double net on the back window which is letting the perfect amount of light through to keep some texture on it.
