“Even to the people closest to us, we have to keep introducing ourselves as people.”

For International Lesbian Day: Virginia Apuzzo, then executive director of the @thetaskforce , on Gayblevision in 1985. She brings home a glowing newspaper profile to her mother, who asks: wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could help people? Old people, children, sick people.

“What about gay people?”

High School Confidential by Rough Trade, on a TV, where it belongs 📺

Carole Pope put queer desire on Canadian radio in the same years Gayblevision was on the air in Vancouver. Songs like this one made a lot of us feel less alone and a little bit wet in the panties.

Her documentary Antidiva: The Carole Pope Confessions, directed by @meemama , is streaming on CBC Gem.

Go watch it. You won’t be disappointed.

Early 80s. Robin Tyler, the first out comic, asked why the Supreme Court cared more about a four-letter word than about r*pe. This week, the whole internet is asking a version of the same question about what institutions treat as serious. From Gayblevision, 1982.

“Okay, you queers, get out in the hall.”

A reenactment from 1980 on Gayblevision. The bathhouse raids were police operations built to scare gay men out of the few places they could gather. Gayblevision invited a police officer to the show to discuss how things could improve.

Tennessee Williams on Gayblevision, in footage very few people have ever seen.

He tells the interviewer he believes there’s more creative power among homosexuals than in the so-called straight world. Why? In his words: “We have so much more to compensate for.”

It’s a line about survival turning into art. It’s also a good description of Gayblevision: a community with no budget, no tech, and no permission, making television anyway.

And yes, he was charming enough that one of our producers ran off with him during the show’s run. More on that soon.

Is Tennessee right?

Meet Brucey Brown: nautilus regular, perfect mustache, searching for true love in the bars and baths every night.

Then he falls for Matt, who has a boyfriend. Who also has a boyfriend. it’s a tale as old this time.
Clayton Giles wrote and performed this song for Gayblevision, and its advice for heartbreak is the funniest in the archive: skip the mountain in Peru, skip the girlfriend, just get another boyfriend too.

Queer comedy, made by us, for us, on our own channel.

Also, where is Clayton Giles?

Mack & Buck. Leathercraft, community, and care.

Mack McKinnon was a Vancouver leathercrafter and community organizer with Vancouver Activists in SM (VASM). Through his store, he raised funds for HIV/AIDS, and he designed one of the first safe sex symbols: a leather condom case worn on the epaulette. He also played a major role in Living In Leather III.

Mack died on November 11, 1988.
Gayblevision is about the people who built our community’s media, our networks, and our care for each other. Mack is part of that story.

Did you know Mack? Contact the LA&M to help preserve his memory in the community archive.

“Goodwill toward men and women. Does that include gays?”

One Christmas season in the early ‘80s, Gayblevision took a microphone onto the streets of Vancouver and asked people exactly that.

Some said of course. Some said they’d never thought about it. One man said he didn’t believe in homosexuals. One woman said the people who’d answer no should be the ones interviewed, so they could expose their shame to the world.

Then a man from Portland stepped up. He published a gay newspaper. He’d been beaten for being gay six months earlier, and his face still hurt.
“But I’m still happy.”

That was the question in 1980s Vancouver, asked out loud on community cable, where almost no one else would ask it.
Gayblevision: The Documentary. Coming 2027.

After Harvey Milk was assassinated in November 1978, San Francisco needed someone to take his seat. Milk had been so sure he’d be killed that he recorded tapes naming who he wanted to replace him. One of those names was Harry Britt.

Britt was a former Methodist minister from Port Arthur, Texas, and a socialist. Mayor Dianne Feinstein appointed him to the Board of Supervisors in January 1979. He went on to win four elections and become Board President.

In 1982, when this Gayblevision interview was recorded, he introduced San Francisco’s first domestic partnership legislation. Feinstein vetoed it. He kept going until it became law.

Here he talks about Milk’s fear, and his own refusal to live by it:

“If I learned anything as a minister, it was that fear is not a good basis for human life.”

And on what gay politics actually means:
“To be gay in our society means you have to reach out for more power than society wants to give you.”

He was sitting in a murdered man’s chair, and he chose excitement over fear.
Harry Britt died in 2020 at 82.

From the Gayblevision archive (1980–86), Vancouver’s pioneering gay and lesbian community cable show. Gayblevision: The Documentary is coming in 2027.
