Celebrating Clayton Giles 🎶 Another wonderful piece of queer cultural history from the @gayblevision archive — and this time I want to shine a light on the singer-songwriter behind it, Clayton Giles. Clayton wrote and performed this brilliantly funny song telling the story of Brucey Brown, a regular on the Nautilus scene who is searching for true love in the bars and baths — only to fall for Matt, who already has a boyfriend… who also has a boyfriend. And Clayton’s musical advice for surviving heartbreak? Forget climbing a mountain in Peru, forget getting a girlfriend — just get another boyfriend too. It’s witty, playful and unmistakably of its time, but it also captures something important about Gayblevision: queer people creating entertainment about our own lives, relationships and experiences — made by us, for us, on our own channel. These archives aren’t only about remembering programmes. They’re also about remembering the people who wrote, performed and created them. So, Clayton Giles — wherever you are, this one’s for you. This stopped me in my tracks. Originally shared by @gayblevision this extraordinary footage of activist Robin Tyler dates back to 1981, as she reflects on why she fights and on the anger that followed the 1979 White Night Riots. Dan White had been convicted of voluntary manslaughter rather than murder for killing San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and openly gay Supervisor Harvey Milk. The LGBTQ+ community’s anger spilled onto the streets—and yet, as Tyler points out, it was gay people who were subsequently characterised as violent. But what really struck me was how much of what she says resonates more than four decades later. Tyler talks about state violence, religious shame, rejection by families and the devastating consequences of prejudice. She also describes how marginalised groups can become the focus of political and cultural battles while people are struggling with very real concerns around jobs, food, healthcare and simply getting by. Watching this in 2026, it is difficult not to think about the way trans people are being discussed and treated today. Different decade. Different target. Disturbingly familiar rhetoric. One of the reasons LGBTQIA+ history matters so much is that it allows us to recognise these patterns. The rights many of us enjoy today didn’t simply appear. People fought for them, protested for them, challenged injustice and sometimes paid an enormous personal price for doing so. We owe it to those who came before us not only to remember that history, but to recognise when elements of it begin repeating themselves. “She was a legend, a landmark”… and Vancouver’s Gayblevision cameras were there. Before the West End bars there was a dive bar at 645 Main Street with knives tucked in denim jackets and a back room where the lesbians sat with their backs to the wall. 🍺 The Vanport Hotel opened in 1911, a working-class rooming house on the edge of Chinatown. It was never built to be a queer space. It became one anyway, because it was cheap, it was rough, and nobody with money wanted it. Through the ‘60s and ‘70s, its back room was one of the only places in Vancouver where lesbians could meet in public. “It was the only place that gay women could go at the time,” one regular remembers. “If you didn’t go to the Vanport, then you weren’t anybody.” In December 1982, she closed her doors for good. More than 400 people came to say goodbye, and Gayblevision’s cameras were there. The hotel came down in 1986 for a retail mall. That mall is gone too now, replaced by a rental tower. The Vanport wasn’t an isolated loss. It’s one entry in a longer Vancouver story: working-class bars and the queer, immigrant, and low-income communities who built lives around them, priced and redeveloped out one building at a time. No city archive was going to capture the Vanport’s last night. Gayblevision cofounder Mary Anne McEwen made sure a camera was there anyway, so a place with no plaque and no protection still has a record: their voices, their grief, their jokes, exactly as they were. Gayblevision (1980–1986) was one of the earliest LGBTQ+ television programs in the world: a volunteer-run community cable show produced in Vancouver that documented queer life, politics, performance, and protest at a pivotal moment in the city’s history. VIVO holds the Gayblevision archive, and we’re excited to see this remarkable material reach a wider audience through Gayblevision: The Documentary.
