POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The posthumous work of celebrated Newburgh artist Gerardo Castro is on view through August 29 in “Catching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning world”. @gcastroart

Garardo’s work will be introduced by Michael Gabor on August 16, 2:00-3:30PM, as part of a gallery walkthrough with curator @mcnulty_alison and three other exhibiting artists. As Gerardo’s life partner and co-founder and co-owner of Newburgh Art Supply @newburghartguy & Newburgh Open Studios @newburghopenstudios , Michael brings an intimate knowledge of Gerardo’s practice.

Gerardo wrote about two bodies of work represented in the exhibition:

“Fire Indigo
Indigo is associated in many cultures with magical and spiritual rituals – probably because of the processes of change it goes through which looks dull green in a vat, emerging into the air- transformed to a vivid blue. Enslaved Africans carried the knowledge of indigo cultivation to the United States, and in the 1700s, the profits from indigo outpaced those of sugar and cotton.

Through simple forms and a straightforward presentation I strive to present the viewer with a color so rich that they are entranced by “burnings” and examine all that lies within a color’s substance. Powerful and dignified, indigo conveys integrity and deep sincerity.

Spiritual Fire
Emanationism is a cosmological theory which asserts that all things “flow” from an underlying principle or reality, usually called the Absolute or Godhead. Any teachings which involve emanation are usually in opposition to “creation out of nothing” as emanation advocates that everything has always existed and has not been “created” from nothing.

We ignorantly believe in the adequacy and assumption that what we don’t see does not exist. If you create sharp divisions and cling to narrow definitions of subject and object, whatever you see will always appear in the context of those limitations.”

It was 2 years today we lost him. This was at a pop up farm event in Downing Park a few months after we met in 2007. Even then, when we were still figuring each other out, I think we both knew we were in a special place. What an amazing 18 years it was. taken in Downing Park by @gcastroart

Today would’ve been your birthday, Gerardo.
You were my teacher, my colleague, my friend.
A bold, brilliant soul who lived unapologetically—fiercely advocating for the unheard, the unseen, and the underrepresented. You painted the world with your truth, your colors, and your heart.

Puerto Rican and proud, outspoken and fearless, you taught me how to see color—not just in art, but in people, in culture, in life. We met at @njcugalleries / NJCU, but your influence reached far beyond the classroom.

I still hear your laughter, see your brushstrokes, feel your fire.
You were many things to many people, and you were taken way too soon.

Today, I say hello to heaven for you.
Con amor y respeto eterno.

This would have been our 18th anniversary. Gerardo on his first visit to his home island Puerto Rico in many years- in 2018. As soon as we got settled, we went immediately to the beach to visit Yemọja. He conjured the spirits no matter where he went but this was an emotion filled moment of coming home for him.

On this day in 2008, Newburgh Art Supply opened its doors for the first time. Support and input from our customers has never wavered. Community and relationships and connections and amazing friendships have all developed here. We’ve learned as much from our customers as they’ve learned from us and it’s reflected in our inventory. Your continued trust that you place in us has been the foundation of our success. As from the start, this is the one place on this earth you will still be able to experience Gerardo’s spirit and enthusiasm for the arts. Thank you all for your support!

Today around midnight marks the 5th anniversary of the announcement of the resignation of Puerto Rico's governor as a result of major protests in San Juan. Marked by the percussive banging of pots and pans, the protests picked up steam and didn't let up. It was the first time ever in the history of the US that protests toppled a duly elected governor.(Detail from @gcastroart painting "Coronation of Santa Cacerola")

On my way to go skating last evening, I stopped by Gerardo's mother's to drop off some more articles written about him and a bunch of sunflowers(his favorite)that he had planted that were now flowering. At the rink this woman had this exquisite hairpiece. First time at @bbpskating . Amazing place, amazing music, welcoming community! Will be back. by @gcastroart
