News Release: GCSO Clarifies Previously Released Employee Hiring and Separation Data

Sheriff Danny H. Rogers and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) are providing clarification regarding personnel data previously released in response to a public records request concerning employee hires and separations.

Guilford County previously released personnel data reflecting 1,258 terminations/resignations and 777 hires within the GCSO from January 1, 2019, through April 23, 2026. Following further review, Guilford County Human Resources determined that the previously reported figures were inaccurate.

The corrected data reflects 431 terminations/resignations and 550 hires during the same reporting period, based on full-time, benefited positions only.

The corrected spreadsheet has been provided to the original requester, and the County has updated its response to the original public records request to replace the inaccurate data. The GCSO appreciates the opportunity to provide clarification and remains committed to transparency and ensuring that accurate information is available to the public.

We are deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of Deputy Jeffrey Routh.

At 62 years old, Deputy Routh decided to attend Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) and serve his community. He joined Team Guilford in 2019 and served as a part-time Deputy assigned to District 1.

Deputy Routh was always willing to lend a helping hand. He frequently volunteered to work extra shifts, including holidays, so his fellow deputies could spend time with their families.

He was so dependable that he even had a take-home patrol vehicle, something part-time Deputies don’t normally receive. He always seemed to end up with one of the oldest vehicles, but that never bothered him. He’d take it home, wash it, wax it, and care for it like it was brand new.

It was just one of the many ways he showed how much pride he took in serving our community.

Beyond the badge, he was a loving husband, father, and friend. His time with Team Guilford may have begun later in life, but those around him will never forget the impact he made.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow Deputies during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Deputy Routh. Thank you for everything you gave to our community and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

Meet Officer Melendez! 🇵🇷

Originally from Puerto Rico, Officer Melendez moved to New York without knowing how to speak English, but he refused to let the language barrier hold him back.

With more than 37 years in law enforcement and corrections, Officer Melendez has served in various leadership and specialized positions throughout his career.

His experience includes serving with the New York State Department of Corrections, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Wake County Sheriff’s Office, and Lee County Sheriff’s Office, where he retired as Captain and Facility Administrator of the Detention Center.

After just six (6) months of retirement, he realized he wasn’t finished serving. He joined the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office as an entry-level Detention Officer because he wanted to experience firsthand the challenges today’s officers face.

He takes pride in learning from those experiences and sharing ideas that can contribute to positive changes within our Detention Centers.

Reflecting on his journey, Officer Melendez shared this message:

“Keep learning. Keep working. Keep moving forward. And most importantly, don’t give up on yourself when you face an obstacle.”

Fun Fact: When he isn’t working, he’s tending to his chickens and ducks, keeping up with dogs who think he’s their staff, and preparing for Bible study!

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re proud to recognize the people and cultures that make up the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.
