This evening we will be performing in @riamdublin ‘s Whyte Recital Hall as part of @empower.womenchangingmusic in the lead up to International Women’s Day on Saturday

The evening will celebrate and spotlight female composers and musicians, and provide a space for a dynamic, thought-provoking discussion from an ICONIC panel. We’ll be performing:

‘Pápainé’ - György Ligeti 🇭🇺

This intensely dramatic piece tells the haunting tale of Pápainé, unfolding through Ligeti’s gripping harmonies and rich textures. Since the story is quite the rollercoaster, we’ve included some translations so you can follow along as you listen.

The piece was considered ‘too avant-garde’ for its time, and didn’t receive its premiere until 14 years after it was composed. Think of it as a Hungarian telenovela - betrayal, heartbreak, and a whole lot of drama…just without the dramatic close ups (we only had the one camera angle soz) by @geantrai_ensemble

Geantraí is one of the three types of Irish music enumerated in the ‘three noble strains’; Suantraí (lullaby), Goltraí (sorrow music) and Geantraí (light, joy music).

While our programming might not always be light and joyful (stay tuned for the Hungarian countryside murderers on horseback 🐎😬), we aim to share our deep joy in making music as an ensemble with our audiences through a variety of styles and eclectic programming.
