A greeting from Maestra Gemma New!

This week, Gemma returns to the VSO alongside violinist Blake Pouliot to perform Tchaikovsky’s radiant Violin Concerto, one of the most beloved in the repertoire. Elgar’s mysterious Enigma Variations paints 14 musical sketches of close friends and family, plus one riddle that intrigues listeners to this day. Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin is a touching memorial to friends lost in the First World War.

Friday, October 16 | 7:00pm | Orpheum
Sunday, October 18 | 4:00pm | Bell Performing Arts Centre.

Born on this day in 1872, Ralph Vaughan Williams was one of England’s most beloved composers — his music deeply rooted in English folk song, Tudor tradition and the landscapes of his homeland ✨

Let’s celebrate with this beautiful performance of his “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis,” featuring @GemmaNewMusic and the @NZSymphonyOrchestra at the Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington!

Out now!! Pinching myself that this is out in the world. I’m so thankful to have had the most incredible team of collaborators who made all of this happen. There is so much work and effort that went into the whole process, and I feel so grateful to have been surrounded by a group of people who treated the project with so much care.

Biggest thank yous to my musical collaborators - @gemmanewmusic , you are such an inspiration to me and I can’t imagine a more sensitive musical partner. How lucky to feel such a deep sense of trust so quickly. Thank you for your vision, your warmth, and your meticulousness.

@bbcsso - thank you for the beautiful artistry, the lush sound, and the focus and dedication you brought through long and difficult recording days. Your hard work is so noticed and appreciated, and it’s always an absolute honor to be sharing the stage with you.

Philip Hobbes - thank you for the keen ear, the morale boosts, and the supportiveness throughout this process. You are a true artist, and I am so happy that this project was in your capable hands.

To all of the people who supported me from the start of this - Nicolas, Didier, the teams at @keynote_artist_management @artsmanagementgroup @outheremusic @delosproductions @borlettibuitonitrust - I am so humbled by your belief and encouragement and am so thankful to be able to work together with the most wonderful group of humans.

Thank you to my friends and family who were relentlessly there for me, carrying me through all the (many) moments of self-doubt and insecurity. I love you!

Most importantly, thank you to the music. To Samuel Barber, John Zorn, Philip Glass. I don’t know what or who I’d be without music in my life, and these people and pieces have given me so many profound emotional experiences, so much purpose, so much meaning. Let’s all make more music!!

Heart is full today. ❤️
