A US premiere tonight in NYC!🗽

#TAMFam composer Kelly-Marie Murphy's “A Thousand Natural Shocks” takes the stage at Lincoln Center tonight, performed by the Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of Gemma New.

Taking its title from Shakespeare's "Hamlet", the work explores the challenges and exhilaration of change and new beginnings, with dramatic orchestral writing that moves between chaos and individual voices emerging from the crowd.

There's a wonderful connection between Kelly-Marie, Gemma, and this piece. Originally commissioned for Bramwell Tovey's first concert as music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 2000, “A Thousand Natural Shocks” was also chosen by Gemma New for her inaugural concert as music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic in 2016. A decade later, she's bringing it to New York audiences, with Kelly-Marie there to celebrate!

A greeting from Maestra Gemma New!

This week, Gemma returns to the VSO alongside violinist Blake Pouliot to perform Tchaikovsky’s radiant Violin Concerto, one of the most beloved in the repertoire. Elgar’s mysterious Enigma Variations paints 14 musical sketches of close friends and family, plus one riddle that intrigues listeners to this day. Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin is a touching memorial to friends lost in the First World War.

Friday, October 16 | 7:00pm | Orpheum
Sunday, October 18 | 4:00pm | Bell Performing Arts Centre.

Born on this day in 1872, Ralph Vaughan Williams was one of England’s most beloved composers — his music deeply rooted in English folk song, Tudor tradition and the landscapes of his homeland ✨

Let’s celebrate with this beautiful performance of his “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis,” featuring @GemmaNewMusic and the @NZSymphonyOrchestra at the Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington!
