“Like the experience of a stroll through the park, Gemma Smith’s recent paintings somehow embody a sense of generative vitality and life unfolding: a sense of becoming, and the deferral of formal resolution.” – Max Delany, 2026.

In ‘Shadow Glass’, Smith extends her ongoing interest in colour and its sensory possibilities, moving between translucency, opacity, light and depth. Atmospheric fields of colour invite the eye to wander, with painterly gestures and material variations revealing themselves gradually through sustained looking.

Forthcoming to the gallery, Gemma Smith’s ‘Shadow Glass’ presents a new body of paintings.

For more than two decades, Smith has developed a distinctive approach to painting.

In ‘Shadow Glass’, her process becomes increasingly attentive to phenomena that "might otherwise escape notice — the shape of wind, movement of a body, the changing density of light,” writes independent curator Max Delany.
