Check out what Gemstone students in GLC were up to this summer!! ☀️

Images 2-3: Bhargav Srinivasan presented at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology conference on his work with Dr. Can Firtina at UMD. His work “RawMod: A Deep Learning Approach to Modification Agnostic Classification in Nanopore Sequencing”, won the Best Poster prize in the HiTSeq track.

Images 4-5: Laura Akkurt volunteered at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore at the Emergency Department. She also presented at a Summer Research Conference this July for her GEMS team AALERT-P.

Images 6-8: Antonia Spivak traveled to Honduras for a medical brigade where she helped provide locals with adequate healthcare resources. She also studied abroad in Copenhagen and learned about different healthcare systems!

Images 9-11: Jehan Idsassi conducted immunology research on the TGF-β signaling pathway in CaOV3 ovarian cancer cells in Dr. Berglund’s lab in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at UMD. She also traveled to Morocco, where she piloted the first international educational toolkit for my non-profit, STEM Up, in my grandmother’s village of Tafroute, and reconnected with family—immersing herself in her indigenous Amazigh roots. by @gemstoneprogram

🤾🏼🏆💢 Honors Dodgeball Tournament 💢🏆🤾🏼

Last spring, Gemstone and ILS collaborated to host the first ever Honors College Dodgeball Tournament! Congratulations again to the champions, @ibh_umd! Gems Camp 2026 is here!! 😎 ☀️⛵️🌴

Gems Camp is a two-night, off-campus orientation program designed to help incoming Gemstone students transition into our program and UMD prior to the first day of classes. You will get a chance to meet other students in the incoming class, get to know older Gems students, and enjoy fun summer activities like paddle boarding and making s'mores!

Students from the Class of 2000 share a peek of what the Ellicott dorms used to look like in the first year of the Gemstone program. 👀 🏠 This summer, Ellicott Hall is undergoing renovations to install air conditioning in the dorms! Check out the UMD Department of Resident Life website for more information about these updates.

💯🥋💪🏽 Self-Defense Workshop 💪🏽🥋💯

The Gemstone Leadership Council (GLC) DEI committee partnered with UMD's Martial Arts Club and Dr. Ken Klotz to organize a self-defense workshop this April. Dr. Klotz teaches self-defense and beginning martial arts courses in the kinesiology department at UMD. He also leads the Klotz Institute of Karate. In this workshop, students got to learn basic techniques for personal safety and had fun practicing with friends! Thank you @umdmartialartsclub and @klotzkarate! Congratulations to the winners of Gems Olympics 2026: Teams Charge, BIOME, and WING!

During Gems Olympics, teams compete in a series of trivia games to win funding for their research activities. The top three teams each received funding from the Gemstone Program. This year, all three winners were newly formed freshman teams! Way to go, Class of 2029 😎🥇🏆 by @gemstoneprogram

🗣📚💎 Thesis Conference 💎📚🗣

Our senior teams successfully defended their theses this April! This year, Gemstone hosted our first in-person Thesis Conference since the pandemic. We were grateful to be joined by faculty mentors, librarians, discussants, family, and friends. This event would not be possible without their support and the amazing work and dedication of the senior Gemstone teams. Congratulations again!
