A limited number of grants of up to $500 are available to Honors students each semester. Selection is based on academic merit, quality of supporting materials, and financial need. Grant money is used to support the research efforts of students and can be used for expenses such as travel to conferences or equipment unique to the student’s project.

To qualify, students must be admitted to a college or departmental Honors program. They must be actively engaged in a research project that leads to an individual Honors thesis.

Students who are awarded the Honors research grant agree to submit a final copy of their thesis to the Honors College and to have their name, thesis title, and abstract posted on the Honors website. A student may receive the award once.

Applications for the Fall 2026 round are due October 1.

Meet the four first-year Honors students featured in Maryland Today’s “Fall 2026’s First-String First-Years,” spotlighting incoming Terps already bringing exceptional talent, initiative, and service to UMD.

From @univhonorsumd, Rory Kepner brings a passion for mountain climbing; Katherine Liu brings her talents as a cellist; and Lily Sieck brings her accomplishments as a duckpin bowling champion. @gemstoneprogram student Yana Trivedi brings a commitment to public service as the founder of a nonprofit inspired by organizations that redistribute unused, unexpired medicine to people who need it.

Want a seat at the table—and bagels while you’re there? Join the Honors Student Leadership Council, a cross-program group of students who help influence Honors College policies, programming, and the student experience.

Council members will meet students from across Honors LLPs and gather for bagels at 10 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month: October 7, November 4, December 2, February 3, March 3, April 7, and May 5.

Students from every class year are welcome. The first two students from each Honors program to sign up will earn a spot on the council.

Junior, Piper Stephan traveled to Alaska, Canada, and did a solo trip to Iceland 🇮🇸

Senior, Tracy Ly studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland through UMD’s PSYC302: Fundamentals of Learning and Behavior program! She explored Galway and the Cliffs of Moher, learned about Irish culture, and tried lots of delicious local food along the way!

Sophomore, Henry Martinez visited his grandparents in North Carolina and went on a fishing boat charter with his dad 🐟🐠🎣

Junior, Hannah Tran caught blue crabs! 🦀

Honors Terps stayed busy (and made an impact!) this summer. 🧪🥼📙🚲📖 Mallory Striplin is a modern-day polymath. One minute, you’ll find her in the chemistry lab. The next, she’s immersed in a book about Black history, teaching a cycling class, or running her own tutoring business.

According to Mallory, @univofmaryland has been a perfect place to pursue her pre-medical and pre-law studies. One reason she chose to come to College Park was its reputation as a top research institution. Last fall, she began conducting research with Chemistry and Biochemistry Chair Daniel Falvey, synthesizing photosensitive compounds for use in nanotechnology.

Mallory envisions a future career treating patients who suffer from medical maladies that stem from social inequities. She also wants to use the law as a tool to help fix the root causes of these issues.

“My goal is to be a physician and practice with patients,” she said. “The law is more of a vest of knowledge for me to use data that I collect from patient experiences to work with companies and decision-makers to figure out how they can create more sustainable practices.”

We are thrilled to announce the new director of University Honors: Dr. Edward (Ed) Eisenstein!

An associate professor in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering (@umdbioe) and fellow of the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (@ibbr_umd), he is a former University Honors Lead Fellow and recipient of the 2024 UH Mission Award. Dr. Eisenstein brings extensive experience in interdisciplinary teaching, undergraduate mentorship, and academic leadership and we can't wait to introduce you to him more properly in our July newsletter.
