An interesting thing about these two works is that they deal not only with their own internal colour composition, but also with each other. The colour of one pushes the other to ignite further. They remain individual works, yet in the studio they activate one another, and that was a conscious part of the process. by @generalbwh

After the bold yellow pair, the Snappers returned to a softer, pastel palette. Snapper 15 absorbed some of the weather from the moody coastal fog, but both pieces kept that same blue at their very centre.
Snapper 14 feels like early morning—a light breeze keeping everything clear and sharp—while Snapper 15 shifts to late afternoon, where contrast softens as sea mist mingles with the fading light. by @generalbwh

After finishing Mullum 11 and 13, I went back to the digital mock-up of Mullum Orb 15. I wanted to pair these two works more closely, initially aiming for an almost synthetic, plastic-like feel. That direction shifted quickly, though—once you push yellow to full pigmentation, it naturally takes on that plastic quality anyway.

Instead, the red and purple centres became the main focus, and the real challenge was making the surrounding yellows work with those central colours. I wanted both centres to remain as bright as possible. To achieve optimum brightness, every band of colour in each piece required its own tailored balance and frequency.

Why push for that exact balance? Who knows—but I love how the final pieces turned out. by @generalbwh

Mullum Orb 13 carries across some of the spatial aspects of Mullum 20 & 22, while Mullum 11 goes right into the atmospherics. I initially was worried about getting too dark and moody with 11 but it came up 👌 taken in Mullumbimby by @generalbwh

These pieces were created back in February 2026 and will be part of From Pistons to Perception, opening October 6. This is the first time I've placed them side by side since their creation. I don’t remember the exact process—I could look at my notes, of course, but it’s nice to just take it all in and wonder, 'What was I thinking?' #brenthallard #colororbs by @generalbwh
