I’m a little behind on posting these days, but these are the finished pictures of a TV stand I made a few weeks ago. This was a project for my own home, so I took the opportunity to try something new: working with plywood. I had two sheets of cherry plywood that had been in the shop for a while now, and I needed to do something with them. This felt like the perfect opportunity to use them - an impromptu project that would use up some of the scrap wood I had laying around the shop. I knew I wanted the piece to feel natural and understated, and I definitely think I accomplished that. To see the design elements, you really have to be paying attention; continuous grain flowing across the door faces, through dowel joinery, shadow lines that wrap the frame, and doors that are fully recessed into the body. If this wasn’t made of plywood, I would love it. 😂 While the project ended on a high note, working on this piece confirmed what I have always suspected, which is, I prefer working in solid wood. Book matched Redwood Burls with an Ash frame. They speak for themselves, but I will say that working with a piece like this grants a tangible reminder of what an incredible medium I get to work with. The amount of history, energy, evolution, and patient growth locked into a live edge piece of a species like this is astounding. It deserves presentation all its own. It does not need to be “useful” to humans. It does not need to have your morning coffee set upon it. It serves to remind you of the world you are a part of, and why now more than ever, it needs to be protected. Beveled edges in the Ash and the machined portions of the Redwood bring a contemporary flavor to a piece of art that started making itself long before any of us were around. I am intrigued by the challenge of bringing the old and the natural to clean contemporary design. Partly because that is my design proclivity, but also because its simplicity allows the nature to be the star. This piece is available. DM or reach out via my website with inquiries. SOLD …. Restored Ward Mid-Century Modern Walnut Dresser This vintage MCM dresser was constructed by Ward Furniture Manufacturing Company. Ward was an American furniture maker established in 1948 in Durham, North Carolina, known for producing accessible, Scandinavian-influenced mid-century modern (MCM) bedroom and case goods during the 1950s and 1960s. This piece has been completely restored from top to bottom, with the restoration focused on preserving and highlighting the original Mid-Century Modern design. The curved, sculptural silhouette paired with the distinctive angled drawer fronts gives this dresser a beautiful architectural quality. The drawer fronts also showcase gorgeous variations in natural wood grain, creating movement and character across the entire piece. The drawers are clean and slide smoothly. One of the biggest upgrades during the restoration was replacing the original top with a brand-new walnut veneer top, giving the dresser a fresh, beautiful surface while complementing the natural wood tones throughout. This is not a simple furniture makeover. We put considerable time and attention into restoring this piece while maintaining the character and design that make vintage Mid-Century Modern furniture so special. As always with vintage pieces there is expected minor wear and tear. We did the best we could in repairing minor veneer damage. An absolute stunner by @phoenixvintagefurniture of Calgary, Alberta Canada⁠ ⁠ "With understated sophistication and world class craftsmanship, this Gibbard nine drawer dresser is ready for act two. This piece was owned and cared for by three generations of a family, but it needed a new home. When I picked this beauty up (with a lot of help from Mr. Phoenix Vintage) the finish on the top was significantly damaged. My 21 year old and I carefully sanded the top, touched up small knicks on the case, drawers and legs, which were then sealed with coats of fresh lacquer. ⁠ ⁠ The top required a more nuanced approach to match the existing finish. Gibbard is somewhat famous for their 17 step finish process that is somewhat shrouded in mystery. Here's what I did to replicate the finish as close as possible:⁠ ⁠ 1) One coat of General Finishes Medium Brown dye stain applied to a wet surface and wiped back⁠ 2) Four coats of shellac, lightly sanding with 400 grit between each coat to provide a bit of warmth and grain fill.⁠ 3) Three coats of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat tinted with Cinnamon Dye Stain.⁠ 4) Final coat of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat tinted with Cinnamon Dye Stain + Medium Brown dye stain.⁠ ⁠ It a process, but I'm over the moon at the match I was able to achieve."⁠ ⁠ GF Water-based Dye Stains penetrate deep into the wood like ink to beautifully magnify the grain and are great for making toners! The piece was fully stripped and sanded, with the exposed wood stained in General Finishes Antique Walnut to enhance its beautiful natural grain. The lower body was painted in @melangepaints Melange Morphose Understory, a rich, earthy green that pairs beautifully with the warmth of the walnut. The upper drawer hardware has been updated with beautiful pulls made in Italy, while the ornate original lower door pulls were cleaned and polished, restoring their gorgeous warm brass finish. Offering an incredible amount of storage, the lower cabinet features a continuous open interior from one side to the other with no vertical dividers, plus a full-width shelf finished with a decorative liner.
