Call it destiny, karma, or two women intensely manifesting—here’s the story of GENERAL ITEMS.

@tiipoi always wanted a home in India, but we’ve always been picky and a bit unhappy with the options for spaces to sell our wares. Last December, one phone call and a site visit were all it took to seal the deal on leasing this one-of-a-kind, last-of-its-kind school provisions store that was part of the RBANM’s school. Without batting an eyelid, we knew this space needed to be part of our growing @tiipoi world, along with a handful of other like-minded designers and India-based studios. The final cherry on the cake was @malinimalik —where it was love at first sight, a match made in heaven, with her stellar expertise in retail and an eye for product like no other.

So, come celebrate the opening of our little store/occasional gallery that we’ve put together for you with so much care and love. See you this Sunday, Bangalore! taken in Bangalore, India by @generalitems.in

We’re in the FT 😍 Featured in Cult Shop by @fthtsi and @financialtimes. A big thank you to @bayasimons and @ines_cross for telling our story ❤️🙏🏼

“‘We met in Bengaluru last year through a mutual friend. You could call it love at first sight,’ says product buyer Malini Malik (@malinimalik) of her first encounter with Spandana Gopal, founder of design studio Tiipoi (@tiipoi). Within 10 minutes, the pair had bonded over their love of minimalist interiors and functional design, and the idea to start a business together was born. Four months later, in August 2024, they opened General Items (@generalitems.in), a shop and “occasional” gallery in Bengaluru’s bustling Ulsoor.”

Thank you, @vogueindia, for highlighting why we do what we do ❤️

“General Items is unmissable with its bright red doors, floor-to-ceiling windows and minimalist but design-forward interiors. Tucked along a tree-lined street in Bangalore, it has quickly generated curiosity among folks of all ages, like the father-son duo looking for a school notebook and those drawn in by the unusual curation of stationery, homeware, decor, textiles and tote bags in one place. Malik and Gopal call it a “design store and an occasional gallery,” explaining that the space was created to foster community building.”

We’re thrilled to host our very first Meet the Maker session from our Pantry section, launched earlier this year as part of SHOWCASE 02: Viewpoint 👁️

Joining us this Sunday is Akhila Vijayaraghavan, the mastermind behind one of our shop favourites, Karam Ok Please @kaaramokplease — a South Indian pantry brand built around regional ingredients, big flavour, and making everyday cooking a little more interesting.

@kaaramokplease began with a simple question: what happens when you take the incredible complexity of South Indian food and put it into a modern pantry? The answer is a delicious collection of hot sauces and condiments inspired by the ingredients, techniques and food cultures of the South — from kandhari chillies and kokum to gongura, tamarind and black pepper🌶️🥫❤️👹

For this session, Akhila will take us into one of the oldest and most fascinating ways we transform food: fermentation. We’ll unpack what fermentation actually is, how it changes flavour, texture and preservation, and how fermented ingredients can find their way into everyday cooking — with, of course, plenty of tasting along the way along with some naturally fermented sodas by @drinkbamboobear🥤

Fulfilled my dream of having a noodle thela for a day thanks to @generalitems.in @malinimalik and lovely thela uncle for letting us take his cart on a Sunday!

My best friend @harshalalala made the best cherry black sesame Swiss rolls and I made my Chengdu inspired noodles and decorated the stall a chilli lemon and my certificate from noodle school. In the middle of all of it a procession decided to show up on the street, a cow sniffed around and seemed disinterested in my noodles and met the sweetest of people who showed up for the pop up.

Thank you for everyone for showing up, all my friends who come through for the tiniest of things and the loveliest team of general items 🩵🫂

We’re back with the latest session of our Meet the Maker series, part of SHOWCASE 02: Viewpoint 👁️

Joining us this Sunday is ceramist Mitali Raju (@rootedobjects), whose objects we can’t seem to get enough of. Her second object, inspired by Irani café memorabilia – a ceramic “Reserved” sign + riso-printed map of Irani cafés in Bombay – is rooted in all things nostalgia and fun 🗺️💛

Mitali will take you through her entire process, from the initial idea to the final piece, and teach you how to design a map. Through a hands-on workshop, you’ll explore your visual storytelling style through map-making. By the end of the session, you’ll have a starting point for a map idea of your own.

Malini Malik of General Items (@generalitems.in) explores why the most interesting corner of your home might just be the kitchen shelf.

Co-founded by Malini Malik (@malinimalik) and Spandana Gopal (@tiipoi), Bengaluru’s General Items brings together a considered collection of small-batch preserves, spices, teas, chocolates, condiments, and dry goods, each chosen as much for its story and provenance as for what it brings to the table.

From organically grown preserves by Kuruvinakunnel Tharavadu Farms and chilli oil by Romano to fine teas by No. 3 Clive Road, farm-to-bar chocolates by Anuttama and handcrafted pasta by Gastronomica, the pantry becomes a place where food, design, memory, and regional identity come together.

For Malini, thoughtful packaging is part of that experience. Puli Spices, for instance, uses bright, playful illustrations to make traditional South Indian spice blends feel contemporary, opening the door to recipes and traditions that might otherwise be overlooked.

Thank you @livingetcind for featuring our newest, much-loved pantry section 🍫🧃🍭🥫

“We often hear customers say, ‘My grandmother used to make this,’ or, ‘I’ve been looking for this everywhere,’ or, ‘I can’t wait to try this,’” says Malini (@malinimalik). “Those are some of my favourite moments because they remind me that food has such a unique ability to connect people through memory, place, and shared experiences.” taken in Bangalore, India by @generalitems.in

This time, they’re bringing Eating House to the sidewalks of General Items (@generalitems.in), serving:

- sichuan-style pork & cowpea noodles 🍜
- black sesame cake 🥮
- ginger ale by @localfermentco.in 🧃

Date: 16th August 2026

Joining us this Sunday is our dearest friend, Archana Pidathala (@archana.pidathala), who is back at General Items (@generalitems.in) after two years to celebrate 10 years of Five Morsels of Love and the launch of the 50th anniversary edition of her grandmother’s Telugu cookbook, Vanita Vantakalu (Volume 1: Vegetarian Recipes)—the book that started it all 📙❤️

Archana will take us behind the scenes of bringing this special book back to life: uncovering boxes of previously unpublished recipes, testing and editing them all over again, and honoring the legacy of an extraordinary woman.

We’ll have snacks from Five Morsels of Love, stories from Archana’s journey, and signed copies of all her books.
