This week's Safari Saturday is 'Alchemist's favourite'

We've picked the very cute cats from @gamelygames Truth or Trap

A fun party game, which is always a crowd pleaser. The aim of the game is to fool your opponent. You take turns to pick a category card and reveal two statements. Players will bet paws on how confident they are in guessing the truth from the lies! Get it wrong and you will lose one of your nine lives!

The black cat is a favoured companion of witches, with their connection dating back centuries in myths and folklore. Making it a perfect pick for today's theme.

So is the following statement a truth, or a trap?
In Norse mythology, the goddess of love and magic, Feyja, rode a chariot pulled by black cats.

Blending chess-like tactics with traditional paper lanterns of the Malay Mid-Autumn Festival, designer @marksmangames presents Tanglung - a portable, small box game that looks cute and colourful on the surface but hides strategic depth.

The game comprises just 16 cards arranged in a 4x4 grid, some face up, some face down, with 2 player tokens and a fan token to block movement.

On their turn, players have two choices:
✨ Move to an adjacent card and move the fan
✨ Use the movement power of the card they are on and then remove that card.

The cards each display a paper lantern in the shape of an animal. Players will move their pieces around this grid in an effort to extinguish the other player or be the one to flip over the last card. There are three ways to win:
✨ Be the player who lands on and flips over the last un-flipped card
✨ Attack your opponent by landing on their card. Do this twice to win.
✨ Ensure your opponent has no moves on their turn

With cards being removed & multiple ways to win, the tension ramps up as the game progresses with objectives changing all the time. It pays to be flexible & think moves ahead, you may start by wanting to go for the other player, but as the cards get flipped, ensuring that you restrict their movement may become the priority.

👇FIRST IMPRESSIONS👇

✨ It's a game that's easy to understand but tricky to master.
✨ The artwork by @the_yuki_doodles is lovely and really brings to life the theme
✨ The die-cut matchbox and fan tokens are nicely done
✨ The selection of card types felt well balanced Whilst there’s an element of luck to what moves you’ll uncover, there always felt like you had lots of choices to make.
✨ As it’s quick to play, it’s a great excuse to keep on playing!

We loved learning about the Malay Mid-Autumn Festival, & whilst the gameplay is tricky, the theme is cosy and relaxing. It's the type of game you can enjoy getting lost in. We really enjoyed it, it's the most accessible chess has been since The Queen's Gambit and if you too are a fan of 2-player strategic battles then we suggest you check it out.

Darkness is the theme for today's #ThematicThursday so we've gathered together three games from the darkest corner of our collection

🌝 Escape the Dark Sector by @themeborne
A narrative, co-operative role-playing game that sees you take on the role of a hapless crew member of an impounded starship trying to escape a vast space station. You'll battle monsters, negotiate with ruffians and upgrade your gear until you eventually perish

🔦Glow by @bombyx_edition
A card-drafting dice management game set in a World devoid of colour. You recruit companions and collect slivers of light to dispel the darkness

✨ Look at the Stars by @bombyx_edition
Flip a card and draw the pattern on your board to form constellations of varying sizes. As the sun rises, the area at the bottom of your night sky falls out of view (well, you can't see the stars in the dawn light). At the end of the game, different-sized constellations are scored.

We've taken to the high seas for this months #AGameForEveryMood🔮 which is, fittingly, for October, 'Dark and Stormy'

Sail by @allplayhq is a co-operative trick taking game for two players. Winning tricks will trigger actions, steering your ship depending on who won the trick. As it's co-operative you'll have to carefully plan who's winning what to try and steer around storms, rocks and deadly sea creatures.

But you can't, because the moment the cards are dealt players are unable to communicate. It's like fumbling in the dark in the middle of a storm, a tricky game in both senses of the word!

As the Beatles once said:
"I am the egg man
They are the egg men
I am the walrus, Goo goo g'joob"

Now, I have no idea what all that means, but what I do know for sure is that the Walrus Landmark card from Tenby is my favourite card from the game Tenby, and I make it a personal goal to include him (because it is a him) in one of my streets every game. Because this isn't just any walrus. It's Wally THE Walrus.

Wally the Walrus visited the quaint Pembertonshire seaside town back in the spring 2021, after drifting all the way from Greenland on an ice floe. It's believed he fell asleep and woke up in sunny Tenby - which makes me love him even more! He stayed for around three months, enjoying the sights and sounds (who can blame him? It's a lovely part of the world).

And why am I telling you all this? Well, today's #SafariSaturday theme is 'Animals named after other animals', and we've picked Wally, because, firstly, he's iconic. And secondly, the scientific name for a walrus is 'Odobenus Rosmarus', which translates to "tooth-walking sea-horse". They got this name because they use their tusks to help heave themselves out of the water onto land.

Anyway, back to Wally specifically, while visiting Tenby, it was reported that he wreaked havoc! He is very much the kind of guest that very easily feels at home. He attempted to climb aboard fishing boats uninvited and capsize dinghies, and his decison of the RLNI Lifeboat slipway as his sunbed caused huge issues.

I hope next time you're playing, knowing a little about Wally's backstory makes you smile and is a reminder to 'go with the (ice) floe'

In The Dark Knight Rises, nobody cared who Bane was until he put on the mask. The question is, can @card_noir achieve the same notoriety with the Monuments expansion for Crown of Ash? (It's got masks in it, the intro is relevant)

Last week we reviewed the Crown of Ash base game, a mix of worker placement and area control that we originally demoed at UKGE 2004 where Emily beat everyone with an extraordinary use of her player power on the final turn. We've now had the opportunity to try the latest expansion, which comes to Kickstarter on Oct 13th

There's new elements & mechanics to make your turns more impactful & give you more strats to try:

✅ Aether
A new resource mainly claimed through combat, with combat cards being reworked

✅ Monuments
As the title suggests, players can build 3 monuments in their territory. These have powerful effects, from unlocking a beefed-up creature card to getting victory points every round

✅ Masks
Spend aether to equip your minions with masks. Physical masks that slide onto your minions that make their actions more powerful

✅ Challenges
Obtain aether by satisfying various conditions. A good way to focus your turn if you're suffering from AP

✅ Plus
2 new building cards that give you access to aether
4 brand new fighter cards will be included in the final version

👇 FIRST IMPRESSIONS 👇

👹 Crucially, the new elements fit seamlessly into the base game. No extra boards or changes to the gameplay; these extra mechanics expand the experience and are things you do 'as well as' not 'instead of'

👹 Crown of Ash is all about player choices and timing. It's an area control game that slows things down by making you gather resources and build. Monuments give you more without overcomplicating the base game

👹 The masks are tactile & fun to use, and the monuments are chunky 3D components, all adding to the impressive looks of the base game

Overall, we really enjoyed the new elements Monuments introduced; it didn't fundamentally change the core gameplay loop. Instead, it added more of what we love! We will be keeping an eye out for the Kickstarter campaign!

#ThematicThursday this week is 'Zombies', so for #ThreeGameThursday we've unearthed three games featuring these shambling horrors.

Crown of Ash by @card_noir
A game that combines worker placement and area control. Battle your opponents and sieze territory by raising undead fighters to your cause, paying costs of sulphur, ash... and blood!

Dead of Winter from @officialplaidhatgames
A co-operative game with a hidden traitor twist! Manage your base of operations, sure up defences, scavenge for supplies and try not to get bitten by zombies. Featuring the deadliest dice in boardgames (according to Adam Blampied)

Necrohamster @jackdaw_games
Spend cards to play cards. Raise beautifully illustrated undead creatures into your tableau and utilise their powers in a race to become the on and only Necrohamster!

#WildcardWednesday is 'Darkening Days'
What games do you reach for as the nights draw in?

For me (Emily), Autumn is jigsaw season. And I've just completed one that's perfect for getting into a spooky mood. The Curse: Augmented Reality Jigsaw Puzzle by @puzzletubes

This 1000-piece jigsaw depicts a spooky house filled with a whole host of interesting characters. It comes beautifully packed in a drawer box, and I really appreciated it coming with two reference pictures - perfect for when you rope in others to help you!

It's beautifully illustrated and packed with detail. Each of the many rooms in the house has a different story taking place, and outside, it's once again filled with fun vignettes. The box suggests ages 5+, but at 1000 pieces this feels a bit challenging for someone younger, and whilst the illustrations are cutesy, there is a clown who has cut his head off with a knife, so caution is recommended. I can definitely see kids enjoying the second part of this puzzle....

Aside from completing the jigsaw, there are some extras that are completed once you have finished:

👀 Augmented reality to view
👀 A secret code to decipher
👀 Several items to find

I like it when a jigsaw has this life beyond just the doing, the reward for completing it.

Truthfully, the augmented reality aspect felt a bit of a letdown, but I am sure younger kids would enjoy the sights and sounds. The final version was the same as the 'try me' teaser on the front of the box, and I assumed the final version would interact more with the rooms in the house and characters in it.

My favourite part was cracking the code to break 'The Curse of Grimwold Manor'. This saw us finding symbols within the finished puzzle, then inputting our answer onto a website to unlock the hidden message.

Overall, I enjoyed this puzzle even though the AR element felt a bit disappointing. It's great quality and would make a lovely gift. I loved the hand-drawn illustrations and level of detail to enjoy while completing it.
I have my eye on another design - Christmas Town!

This week's #TopicTuesday🎲 is Ramping up the tension - what's a game that gets harder as it goes along.

I think hidden movement games are the epitomy of this. What starts off as a wealth of possibilities for either team usually ends up being a tense game of cat and mouse culminating in a daring escape or heroic capture.

Whitehall Mystery from @cobblepotgames is just that. A high stakes one-verus-many chase around old London Town to catch the nefarious Jack The Ripper.

In this game one player takes the role of Jack, running through London trying to avoid being caught by the team of three police officers on the hunt to bring him to justice.

Each character has different powers available to them and Jack's movement is hidden from the police team.

This means Jack can try and dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge his way through the ever closing net tightening around him while the police check their adjacent spaces for clues, gradually piecing together his movements.

This week's #MysteryMonday🎲 is 'growth'

Do you know this game where players tend to their flowers and veg whilst trying to protect their plots from being ransacked by other players?

👇 L A S T W E E K ' S R E V E A L 👇

It was Monsdrawsity by @deepwatergames

One player is the witness and tries to describe a monster from memory after having looked at it for a minute or two, while the other players try to draw it from their description. Drawing skill may in an advantage but it's mostly a game about communication and describing the monster accurately, as points are gained for the drawing that looks most like the illustration on the card.
