Happy Indigenous People's day.

I'm happy to finally have The Ohlone Way by the late Malcolm Margolin to inform the day. Love what he says in the preface about a good society.

Music: "Columbus" by @millersessions. We have a long way to go until we're there. Sail on. by @generous_muse

Got to spend some time in one of my favorite Oakland spaces yesterday, the Bender Room in the Carnegie Library at Mills. Designed by Julia Morgan and built by Andrew Carnegie's daughter Margaret, this is where the first draft of the United Nations Charter was hashed out.

There was a Julia Morgan festival in 2012. This and the Campanile were the first buildings she designed, built in 1906.

It hurts my heart that there are no longer books in this room. And that NU does not want any of Mills' historic properties designated.

But it made me happy to see the poster! Is this a sentimental remnant? Or is the MFA coming back? taken in Mills College by @generous_muse

The audiotrack is the sound of running water!

The fountain has been silent, with a few hopeful exceptions, for 17 years.

Thank you to @fojmp for finally making the Cascade run again. It's taken so many people working together, putting the pieces together, and committing time and energy. When the city agreed to let passionate volunteers manage things, a solid plan came together.

Thank you Dale Risden, Joel Schlader, Bill Sanders and many more. Joaquin Miller is smiling down from the stars. 🌟 🙏🏼

Come hear his poetry at the California Writers Club's annual picnic on 10/18/26!

You'd think I'd like this.

The new Meta AI is cute. I love cute. But I hate this..

Just like Zuckerberg hijacked the word "friend," he is now techwashing the beautiful meaning of the word "muse."

If you've ever had a muse (I've had many), you know what one is. A muse is not your servant. She is the boss of you.

Yes, she.

And the muses have names.

Mighty Mark's Muse is pretending to defeminize and enslave herself. But don't let the cuteness seduce. Muses demand a price. Will she control your creativity, demand your devotion? Does she want to do your creativity for you, pose as your intuition?

Don't confuse your own muse with this loser. You don't need AI to imagine. by @generous_muse

Feeling a little yucky 🤮 for having spent a dozen hours working on a piece about an email that someone took 30 seconds to generate with AI.

But the hundreds of hours I spent on the book we're talking about are worthy of the fuss, and this artifact of my days with a pen and not a keyboard deserves another few minutes in the spotlight.

And maybe it was Donna Tartt... because the Substack AI detector certified it as 100% human.

We're doomed.

Enjoy my new word though.🤮

On September 11th, I have the great honor of addressing the San Francisco Browning Society as the kick-off speaker for their organization's revival!

Come and hear about the friendship between England's gentle giant Robert Browning and Joaquin Miller of the wild west.

In your grandparents' day, The Browning Society was a worldwide organization. The San Francisco branch was established in 1905. They host monthly presentations, always with poetry by Robert and Elizabeth, and tea of course!

Joaquin Miller, who wrote a poem for American schoolchildren, built a monument to the Brownings in what is now Oakland's Joaquin Miller Park. (He preferred whiskey.)

The triumphant rediscovery of their kinship began when Friends of Joaquin Miller Park repaired the tattered tower in 2025. Thank you to the SF Browning Society for your contribution to the restoration...may it be a new beginning for your kind society as well.

"Say this much, and be satisfied; Gloat over it all undenied. I simply say he was my friend."— Joaquin Miller

"What a thing friendship is - World without end." — Robert Browning

Wow, two drag icons in two days, what a sad week.

My dad forbade me from going to the #rockyhorrorpictureshow for fear it would "corrupt me." I'm so glad it did. Tim Curry was brilliant.

Thank goodness for Dolly Parton as the wholesome antidote.

Would that they'd done a duet!❤️ See less by @generous_muse
