POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In the past five years, the California Writers Club has been hosting a litquake-adjacent event in the Oakland Hills that celebrates our very, very deep roots here, and the contributions that early California writers made to American thought.

Congratulations and BRAVA to Kristen Caven for her historical research. These are scenes from her “soft unveiling” leading up to this Sunday’s event.

Bay Area Writers, we hope you can join us to learn about this project… and to enjoy the day reading historic + and our own works! RSVP at the FB event or on our website.

Happy Earth Day hosted by #fojmp and the Oakland Parks and Recreation dept!

Thank you to Dale, Bonnie, Gary, Stan, Joel, Kristin, and Megan board members for your contribution today! A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL the volunteers. We would not be here without your ongoing weekly efforts!

Also, the hiking group that stopped by, signed up, and @loren.taylor, it was a truly impressive experience witnessing over a hundred men turn out today! Keep hiking! See you soon!

Thank you for the bagels and smear, Megan. Cynthia, those baked sweet treats were 😊 ☺️ delightful.

Another thanks to the @outdoorkidsot group!

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities: ↔️

If you can not attend a specific event, FOJMP hosts recurring workdays to keep the park in top shape:

Weekly Gardening: Every Thursday, volunteers gather to maintain the park’s specialized gardens at the cascade.

Saturday Stewardship: Most Saturdays feature projects such as fencing railing, safety improvements, and trash pickup.

Monthly Board Meetings: Open to the public, these are usually held on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 PM (currently via Zoom). It’s a great way to get involved in the planning of future park improvements.

How to Get Involved

For those interested in "Behind the Scenes" work, FOJMP also seeks volunteers for:

Website and social media management.

23-10-2025 ~ Paris, France
Our first night in Paris.
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Art Deco.

We were fortunate enough to have been invited to a cocktail party with a wonderful view of la Tour Eiffel in all her lovely, sparkly glory.

I'm wearing an early 1930s True Vintage black frock with a handmade lace collar. And both Gina and Kristen are wearing 1920s velvet dresses.

It was a perfect first night in Paris with friends, and we toasted our friends who were present and those who were unable to be there. We missed you.

Meet Our Moderator:
Kristen Caven is the CWC Berkeley Branch Berkeley Branch historian and recipient of the Jack London Award. As the CWC state Writer-in-Residence in Joaquin Miller Park, she mines Miller’s writings and literary constellation for inspiration, some of which she shared on her Zoom presentation, “Joaquin Miller Reconsidered: A Closer Look at Oakland’s OG Poet,” on Thursday, April 24th, sponsored by the CWC, Friends of Joaquin Miller Park, and the Oakland Public Library.

This panel is part of Kristen’s weekly interviews between Mother’s and Father’s Day this year, celebrating the launch of her audiobook, The Winning Family: Where No One Has to Lose, which views parenting as an act of resistance. In October, she received a grant to host “Dimond Dirndl Day” at Oakland’s Oaktoberfest, featuring her animated play, The Dirndl Diaspora.
