During her residency at at BioClub Tokyo, Genietta will research the connection between the body and the territory through salt. By harvesting salt from both human sweat and the Pacific Ocean, she explores the transition of fluid into crystal as a material history of the land. Mapping Tokyo’s buried rivers, Varsi will organize sweating encounters to bring the city’s hidden waters to the surface. She will research traditional Japanese salt-making processes, and will be working on laboratory techniques to grow salt crystals from sweat and seawater. Her work during this period will explore the boundaries between the microscopic world, the hidden flows and the city landscape.

レジデンシー期間中、ジェニエッタは「塩」を通じて、身体と土地のつながりを探究します。人間の汗と太平洋の両方から塩を採取することで、彼女は液体が結晶へと変化する過程を、その土地の物質史として探求します。東京に埋もれた川をマッピングするヴァルシは、この街に隠された水を地表に引き出すべく、「汗」をテーマにした出会いの場を企画する。彼女は日本の伝統的な製塩法を研究するとともに、汗と海水から塩の結晶を育てる実験室での技術開発に取り組む。この期間中の彼女の作品は、微視的な世界、隠れた水の流れ、そして都市の景観の間の境界を探求するものとなる。

本イベントは、フィンランドセンター、フィンランド・バイオアート協会、およびBioClub Tokyoが主催する「フィンランド・アート＆サイエンス・レジデンシー」の一環です。

We are delighted to announce that for the 2026 Art Sci residency that Genietta Varsi has been selected to pursue her work S(w)ea(t) this year at BioClub at FabCafe Tokyo.

During her residency, Varsi will pursue a project she calls S(w)ea(t), a sculptural ritual that researches the connection between the body and the territory through salt. The work is a branch of an ongoing investigation she began in 2023 into sweat and salt harvesting. By gathering salt from two sources at once: human and the pacific ocean, she treats the transition from fluid to crystal as a material history of the land, connecting human biological systems and ecological flows.

We are pleased to announce that Genietta Varsi @geniettta has been selected for the 2026 Tokyo Art & Science Research Residency, organised in collaboration with Bioart Society, BioClub Tokyo and the Finnish Institute in Japan.

Genietta Varsi is a Peruvian sculptor and researcher whose practice explores the material relations between humans and their environments by handling biological and ecological activities as sculptural processes. She holds an MA from Aalto University in Finland and a BFA in Sculpture from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.

During her residency, Genietta will research the connection between the body and the territory through salt. By harvesting salt from both human sweat and the Pacific Ocean, she explores the transition of fluid into crystal as a material history of the land. } los cuerpos secretan un secreto, sudor. entrar con mi cuerpo por las venas para recordar los lugares ocultos y olvidados. el sudor es una aparición. gotas misteriosas que perspiran a través de la piel. una criatura supermaterial. una entidad corpórea misteriosa y microscópica, de una naturaleza líquida cruza la piel. aparece como una parte del universo de los espíritus que se desprenden del cuerpo y se convierten en cuerpos en sí. una supermateria expresada, exhalada, procesada, inhalada, inspirada, transinspirada, transpirada. el sudor es un cuerpo desangrado más allá de sí mismo para dar a conocer su presencia. derramada. un yo escupida y esculpida en forma de vapor.

bodies secretly secrete sweat. enter with my body through the pipes to re-mind and re-member the hidden and forgotten places. sweat is an apparition. perspiriting mysterious drops through the skin. a supermaterial creature. a mysterious and microscopic bodily entity of a liquid nature comes out through the skin, a river. appears as a part of the universe of spirits that are detached from the body and turned into bodies itself. a supermaterial expressed, exhaled, processed, inhaled, inspired, transinspired, transpired. it passes through and beyond the body in the form of a gaseouliquid vapour. sweat is a perspired body, bleeded beyond itself in order to make its presence known. leaked out. a spitted and sculpted self in the form of vapour.
/bodies sculpt and spit out sweat. they sculpt and spit out flows. they sculpt and spit out rivers. they sculpt and spit out the place.
