So nice to (briefly) light the chandelier for the first time the other night at the @connectionsthroughwood exhibition at Centrespace Gallery in Bristol. It only took a year before it could finally be given space to hang and shine as envisioned, but the wait was worthwhile!

I recently finished off a model of my pole lathe to take to events where my lathe wasn't there. I got a bit carried away, not sure the chopblock or mallet were entirely necessary. Tis a nice opportunity to display the mind-boggling skill of Suzie's baskets (@foragedfibres ) though. Even though I'll have my lathe at Tear Up, I'll bring this along for people to look at in detail 🙂.

Initially this was made for the @oakfair1 , which is also this wkend. I'm gutted to not be going, but those of you in the SW who like woody things should deffo head along if you've time.

Inspired by @bramblecarpentry 's recent dollshouse build.

Morning all, a little introduction to those of you who don't know my background or have just started following my work.

I'm a greenwoodworker based in Bristol mainly spinning items on my pole lathes and maintaining an increasingly jungle-y workshop to offer courses in various wood-based crafts. I teach most of the turning courses with other great local based tutors coming in to teach the others.

I recently became a member of the RPT (the register for professional turners), and won the log-to-bowl event at the Bodger's Ball.

I do seem to jump around a bit with what I'm working on, but I try and make it an honest picture of what goes on in the life of a craftsman, and I hope you hang around to see it all tying together.

My current focus is on writing a book with plans for a much-researched pole lathe, which I believe to be more comfortable and efficient than existing designs. If you want to find out more I have a number of recent blogs on my website that explain my thinking.

I'm also gearing up for the next iteration of @connectionsthroughwood happening the end of September in Bristol. I do hope some of you can join us for that 🙏🙂.

Cleft cedar lidded bowl. Something a bit different today...Made as a commission last year and I forgot to post it on here. Really enjoyed making this one, always keeping an eye out for wood that cleaves oddly these days 🙂.

If you have some wood you'd like me to make you something from then do let me know (ideally whilst the wood is still green, this wood was dddrryyyyy 🤪)

New post available to read on my website. The astute will notice this is neither me nor my workshop nor my lathe. This is Arturo, in the Museo Ethnographico de Grandas de Salime. @woodmungler and I visited him as a funded trip by the @turners.company.of.london . This is the first of six blog posts about our trip. Enjoy!

Also, those same astute people will notice the backrest and pedal set-up are similar to those I've been using (but also totally different, but that is next level geekery!). This setup was one of many that I took inspiration from when I built the mega-lathe and recent portable lathes.

Spalted beech bowl off the lathe this week. A bit too spalted for anything other than a small fruit bowl (spalting weakens the wood). On this bowl I finally became comfortable with a new technique I've been practising for roughing out bowls after seeing Arturo's method in Spain. Not only is it much quicker, it is also much easier on the body and uses less energy. Log to bowl racetimes might be about to quantum leap again, time will tell!

Finally had some time to digest @woodmungler and I's trip to Asturias in Spain in early September. I plan on kicking off the first round of blogposts on this next week. Drafting it has been fun though, opening up as many questions as answers! 🤣 Fingers crossed it'll drop sometime nxt wk. Not to be missed if you have an interest in craft and particularly pole lathe turning!

The only treen I made at this year's Bowl Gathering festival. A small locking lidded box to get my eye in again after a revelation on our Spain trip. I took my time when making the mechanism to measure aspects, thus meaning the lid was fitted second attempt. I'm fairly sure I could now get it to fit first time everytime. Now all I need is the right wood and some time to experiment. Might be another year though! This stuff takes time!

The lid locks due to the drying process of green wood.
