Every year we say it can’t get better. Every year it does. The George Cleverley Box. Royal Ascot 2026. One of the great traditions in the British calendar, and one we are proud to have made our own. Our guests were helicoptered into the Royal Enclosure, two-Michelin-starred chef @alexdilling closed his restaurant to cook exclusively for our guests, Cristal flowed from noon, stories were shared and many friends made. Behind the shoes, a few stories of his own.

Our CEO, Mr. George Glasgow Jr joins @robbreport for ‘The Answers’, reflecting on what he continues to learn from his father, the craftsmen at the heart of Cleverley, and the Royal Arcade premises we’re fortunate to call home. There’s room for a few personal favourites and some rather unusual commissions, too.

A bespoke shoe begins with a last carved for one person. The knowledge behind it has been handed from shoemaker to shoemaker for generations. We found plenty to talk about with LOUIS XIII, whose Cellar Masters must think generations ahead.

While in Los Angeles, George welcomed clients to The Beverly Hills Hotel to see our shoes up close and join Michael for a private tasting. Afterwards, we crossed to Dante for dinner, where the conversation continued.

Part one of our United States trunk show is under way. Mr. George Glasgow Jr. and Master Shoemaker Mr. Benjamin Hunt have visited Austin, Houston, Dallas and San Francisco, and the tour continues this week.

Las Vegas: 7th October, The Wynn

Los Angeles: 8th, 9th and 10th October, The Beverly Hills Hotel

Phoenix: 11th and 12th October, The Global Ambassador Hotel

The full bespoke collection, our newest styles and an expanded range of accessories, set up as you would find them at Old Bond Street. The East Coast follows in November, beginning in New York on the 3rd.

Shooting season and the Albert slipper share an origin. Early nineteenth century England, where gentlemen came in from outdoors with gravel, sand and mud on their boots and slippers waited in the hall to protect the rugs and polished floors. The name is widely believed to honour Prince Albert.

Two centuries on, a pair in a pheasant motif seems the right thing for a day in the field to end with. And it is no less at home with a dinner jacket.

The waist of a bespoke shoe is the narrow section beneath the arch, and it is where a great deal of quiet skill is spent. Here our craftsman pares away excess leather from the welt and sole with a shoemaker’s knife, cutting close and clean against the upper. The tape is there to protect the upper from the blade.

It is slow work, and almost none of it is visible once the shoe is on the foot. Which is rather the point of doing it properly. taken in G J Cleverley & Co. by @georgecleverley
