Join us next week for a conversation with Dr. Daniel Byman as he discusses his latest book, "American Pogroms: How Forgotten Massacres Shape America" (Oxford). Moderated by Dr. Heidi Urben, this discussion will explore two centuries of communal mob violence against minority communities in the United States, examining the historical conditions that enabled these attacks and what is now at stake when we allow leaders to legitimize violence and the mob to rule.

Co-sponsored by the Georgetown Center for the Study of Slavery and Its Legacies and the SFS Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion.

➡️ Monday, November 2, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM EST (doors open at 3:45 PM) at the Mortara Center for International Studies on the Hilltop Campus.
➡️ Copies of the book will be available for purchase, and an audience Q&A will follow the discussion. Seating is limited for Georgetown students, faculty, and alumni—be sure to register in advance at the link in our bio! by @georgetown_ssp

Can location verification actually pump the brakes on AI chip smuggling, or is the tech simply too complex and costly to enforce?

SSP students had a fantastic time diving deep into this critical issue! CSET Director of Analysis Cara LaPointe was joined by report authors Jacob Feldgoise, Kyle Miller, and Hanna Dohmen to unpack CSET’s latest findings on enforcing U.S. export controls through location tracking. From policy trade-offs to practical implementation, the panel tackled the tough questions around securing the AI supply chain in an increasingly complex global landscape.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and to the Center for Security and Emerging Technology!

Full house at "AI Goes to War — How America Builds Military Advantage in the Age of Artificial Intelligence!"

Moderated by Navy veteran and CSS Non-Resident Senior Scholar Tony Johnson, the event brought together three leading practitioners shaping defense AI today: Lindsey Sheppard, former Pentagon director who scaled the Maven Smart System into a multi-billion-dollar program of record; Dave Vorland, former Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense who shaped U.S. space and missile defense policy; and David Helmer, a strategist bridging the gap between AI engineering, law, and defense funding.

Our panelists delivered a practical look at the realities of military AI—what it can and can't do for defense, what it takes to move a capability from demo to deployment, and who's accountable when the machine gets it wrong. Thank you to our speakers and attendees for a phenomenal, insightful discussion!

AI Goes to War puts you across the table from three practitioners building military AI today: Lindsey Sheppard, the former Pentagon director who scaled the Maven Smart System from a $230 million pilot into a multi-billion-dollar program of record; Dave Vorland, a former Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense who shaped U.S. space and missile defense policy; and David Helmer, a strategist who moves fluidly between AI engineers, policy lawyers, and program leaders to get emerging technology funded and fielded. by @georgetown_ssp

We are wrapping up another incredibly successful Kalaris Intelligence Conference.

Thank you to everyone who joined us over the past two days! Special thanks to the International Intelligence History Association for partnering with us for this year's conference and for bringing together such enriching academic paper presentations from intelligence historians.

We also want to extend our gratitude to Mr. Michael P. Dempsey, former Acting Director of National Intelligence, who sat down for a fireside chat with SSP Director Dr. Rebecca Patterson. Their authentic and insightful discussion focused on the current state of American intelligence and the significant opportunities and challenges the Intelligence Community faces moving forward.

We hope the concluding event of the conference, the SFS Career Center Kalaris Intelligence Conference Career Fair, was helpful to students. We look to you in shaping the future of the IC! @gusfs_careers

This conference is made possible in part by the generosity of the George T. Kalaris Intelligence Studies Fund. Born in Billings, Montana, George Kalaris spent most of his career as a CIA clandestine operations officer across Greece, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, and Brazil after joining the agency in 1952. In 1979, he was named special assistant to DCI Stansfield Turner, and the following year was credited with ending decades of tension between the agency and the FBI through the creation of a joint operation to turn Soviet agents into defectors. by @georgetown_ssp

Over the weekend, SSP students enjoyed an immersive experience led by Dr. Brad Wineman at the historic Chancellorsville Battlefield.

The "Staff Ride" provided an in-depth assessment of the battle while challenging much of the orthodox historical interpretation of the past 150 years.

Thank you to Dr. Wineman for providing students with a chance to experience classroom concepts and materials in a real-life historical setting!

This week, SSP had the chance to sit down with author Geoffrey Gresh, non-resident Senior Fellow with the University of South Florida, to discuss his new book "Leaning Seaward: Japan as a Maritime Great Power." Gresh spoke in his personal capacity about his book.

Gresh shared his examination of Japan as a comprehensive maritime power in the twenty-first century and considered what that status means in an age of great power competition. Students engaged in discussion on Japan’s maritime capabilities and influence across economic, industrial, and security sectors throughout the Indo-Pacific.

Thanks to everyone who participated, and we hope to see you at the next CSS Speaker Series!
