Carl Kostyál is delighted to present ‘Between Hand & Mouth’ the third solo exhibition of Georg Nodmark (b. 1994, Gothenburg, Sweden) with the gallery and the artist’s first solo exhibition at Hospitalet in Stockholm.

Nordmark first exhibited with the gallery at Art Cologne, Germany (2022) followed by a duo presentation with Harrison Pearce at Chart Art Fair, Copenhagen (2023). Nordmark most recently exhibited with the gallery at MARKET ART Fair in the group exhibition, ‘For Pete’s Sake 2.0’ (2025). Nordmark has also featured in several curated group exhibitions at Hospitalet, Stockholm, including Gullringsbo Konstsamling, Vol. 1 (2022), Vol. 2 (2023) and Vol. 3 (2025).

Georg Nordmark’s practice centres on the construction and adaptation of objects derived from tools used in the handling of animals. His sculptural works draw directly from these utilitarian forms, reconfiguring them to examine the systems through which human control is exercised over non-human behaviour. Central to his approach is the concept of “enrichment” — the idea that captive environments can be made more tolerable by introducing stimuli that mimic natural behaviours.

Nordmark’s work both adopts and critiques this logic. By producing objects that facilitate controlled expressions of instinct, he highlights how such systems substitute the complexity and abundance of natural habitats with predetermined, restricted responses. His sculptures often suggest a tension between care and control, exposing how environments are engineered to manage behaviour within confined, artificial conditions.

Through this lens, Nordmark’s practice reflects on broader questions of domestication, agency, and the design of spaces that regulate both animal and human activity. by @georgnordmark

Scheggian Peanut Puzzle , 2026

The wall-based work reimagines Intra-Ena-Cubo by Paolo Scheggi as a puzzle feeder.
In Scheggi’s original, the cavities function as visual and conceptual voids, spaces that can be perceived but never entered, aligning with Spatialism, where the work is activated through movement and perception.
By introducing movable shutters and embedding food inside, this latent activation becomes literal and task-based. The viewer or animal must probe, slide, and open to access what was once notional depth. The void becomes operative, structured as prompts and responses.
The work introduces a notion of labour. Rather than immediate access, the feeder requires sustained engagement, turning feeding into a sequence of actions over time. What would otherwise be directly available is mediated through an obstacle, producing activity where none is required. Effort becomes a condition of access, imposed through a structure that channels behaviour into repetitive tasks.
At the same time, it draws out an affinity between neo-avant-garde reduction and behavioural design. Scheggi’s serial structures rely on simple, repeatable operations. Here, the puzzle functions as a substitute for a lost habitat, where reduced actions stand in for more complex environmental engagement. In parallel, Scheggi’s minimalism compresses a broader spatial experience into a controlled form.
Situated within a longer trajectory of postwar art, this shift echoes the expansion of the viewer’s role from perceptual activation to participation and immersive formats.
Within this trajectory, the work reframes participation as conditioned and instrumentalized. The puzzle feeder makes explicit how engagement can be shaped into a loop of action and response, where interaction is preconfigured and outcomes anticipated, reflecting on the experiential turn not as expanded agency but as a moment where behaviour is directed and participation can align with mechanisms of control.
