Gerald Feguson's (@geraldfergusonart) assemblage and stencil work from the 1990s is on view at Cooper Cole (@coopercole) through June 27.

"Using unconventional materials including house paint, construction materials, and organic objects Ferguson developed systems and self-imposed procedures that emphasized repetition, duration, and process over traditional notions of composition or expression. His paintings often recorded the physical act of their own making, transforming routine gestures into rigorous conceptual structures. At once humorous and methodical, Ferguson’s work challenged conventions of authorship and artistic value while remaining grounded in the material realities of painting. The works in this exhibition reflect a mature period in the artist’s career, where conceptual clarity and physical endurance became inseparable. Through accumulation, seriality, and acts of measured labour, Ferguson created paintings that continue to resonate for their intellectual precision, formal restraint, and subtle wit." –Courtesy of Cooper Cole

Opening today, Friday, February 28 @canada.nyc
61 Lispenard, New York, NY

CANADA is pleased to present Modular Rhythms, a group exhibition on view from February 28 through April 12, 2025, exploring the interplay of repetition, structure, and variation. Through dynamic shifts in scale, material, and process, the exhibition brings together eight artists whose works engage rhythm as both an underlying force and an expressive mode.

Featuring works by Brooklin A. Soumahoro, Brian Belott, Joe DeNardo, Gerald Ferguson, Xylor Jane, Elisabeth Kley, Luke Murphy, and Robin Peck, Modular Rhythms highlights the tension between order and improvisation, precision and chance, surface and depth. Whether through serial gestures, layered compositions, or material accumulation, each artist navigates the space between control and fluidity.

Gerald Ferguson's 'The Standard Corpus' is available for purchase at the 'BOOKS' section on @canada.nyc website or at the link story. Read below for Ferguson's statement on the making of the book:

"The idea for a dictionary arranged by word length grew out of a series of pages of single letters of the alphabet that I typed as graphics in 1968, and which represented efforts to extend ideas, then current, relating to modular composition, objectively determined forms and the material status of printed letters.

The composing of such a work by hand was much too impractical and I therefore investigated computer sources and came upon the Brown University Million Word Corpus. This Corpus consists of 1,014,232 words or tokens, obtained by taking

five hundred, 2,000 word samples in each of the 15 subject categories listed below (the number to the right of the category indicates the number of 2,000 word samples in that area of written language):

Press: Reportage 44

Gerald Ferguson in 2008 working on his last landscapes - after breaking his arm in a car accident he couldn't move the regular objects he used to make his frottage works, so embarked on making paintings directly with a 4" paint roller and black enamel paint. by @geraldfergusonart
