Gerald Ferguson's (@geraldfergusonart) 'Landscapes' is now on view at The Blue Building Gallery (@thebluebuildinggallery) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. "Gerald Ferguson (1937-2009) was a much loved conceptual artist and painter who lived and taught in Halifax. Born in Cincinnati, Ferguson came to Canada to teach at NSCAD in 1968. He would continue to teach at NSCAD until his retirement in 2006. Jerry, as many knew him, was a major figure in Canada’s Conceptual Art movement. His work was included in 'Information' (1970) at MoMA, New York, and his works are held in many public and private collections across Canada. ‘Landscapes’ will feature a curated selection of paintings and sculpture from Ferguson’s last body of work. In these works he makes his most direct address to place: aligning the stark and economical approaches to painting he developed as a conceptual artist with the raw and sparse beauty of Nova Scotia." –Press release courtesy of The Blue Building Gallery #GeraldFerguson

In his later years, Gerald Ferguson (@geraldfergusonart) chose frottage exclusively as a means of producing paintings. Frottage is a term that riffs on the surrealist rubbing technique used to produce abstract forms from which dreamscapes could be drawn. Ferguson saw the paintings from this period as perfectly contiguous with his early conceptual-driven language and grid-based pieces. The frottage paintings were made by placing raw canvas over everyday objects common in hardware stores - ash cans (as seen here), drain covers, rope, chain, loose board or rod - and then passed a paint roller laden with black enamel paint over the canvas, producing a kind of rubbing and transforming nondescript substrates into formal units of achingly restrained compositions that held solemn beauty and occasional dark humor. For Ferguson, that such beauty could come from such abject means was a source of grim ecstasy – a semi-private joke between himself, his art, art history and work. ... #GeraldFerguson 16 Ash Cans, 2006 Enamel on canvas 47 × 52 inches (119.38 × 132.08 cm) 9 Ash Cans, 2006 Enamel on canvas 39 × 49 inches (99.06 × 124.46 cm) 8 Ash Cans, 2006 Enamel on canvas 53 × 41 inches (134.62 × 104.14 cm) 4 Ash Cans, 2006 Enamel on canvas 22 × 26 inches (55.88 × 66.04 cm)
