Letterpress Printing and Bookbinding in Detroit, USA

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
If you have a printing press, you should use said printing press. You hear a lot about the power of the press when people talk about Letterpress, or just having a press in general. Whether it’s for Gaza, or Sudan, or against ICE, we need to be printing. And I want to say “now” is the time, but it’s all the time. Print for your folk. Print for your friends, and your community.

Since last Wednesday all the keynote speakers of the @hamiltonwoodtype Wayzegoose have decided to no longer attend in solidarity with the printing community. A number of the presenters and sponsors have also backed away. Many of them have made public statements. There are 40+ posts that I’ve saved to this profile in the resharing section all talking about this event, our solidarity with one another, and what we think is the best course of action—the resignation of Hamilton’s board.

@tenderheartpress said something last week that changed me. That there are people who have so deeply invested themselves in white supremacy that they will never turn away from it. You will know it when you see it. It’s the printers and institutions who do not wish for a free Palestine. It’s people and institutions who have made a living off of tying their practice to community, to the aesthetics cultivated by black printers, who are still participating in this conference. I’m embarrassed to say that some of these folk, these institutions, are in my city. They wish to continue to receive the privilege they have while avoiding the work that it takes to build a better community. What this means is, now that the community has shown what its stance is on this issue, there is nothing left for the board of Hamilton and its supporters to defend other than White Supremacy.

More directly to the board of Hamilton. What this week has shown is how deep your investment in white supremacy is. That you’d be willing to abandon your community. That you’d be willing to harm the staff of the museum and threaten their livelihood. That is all that is left to defend, that investment. There are so many things you could have done to make this better. If you care about us, the community you are supposed to serve, then you will step down.

@mapleserum took this photo of Chen, Varun, & I when they were visiting the shop. It reminds me that we need to take more photos. I don’t have as many photos as I’d like, especially in the space. I wish everyone was in the shop that day because the photo came out so nice.

Many thanks to Dan, looking forward to our next visit with you and Becky. taken in Detroit, Michigan by @geraldfschulze

I have a good story for this card. I had just closed Small Works. I was sitting at my desk, looking out the window, wondering if I had just made a terrible mistake. I had just made a simple website for myself, and I wondered if I would ever get another job.

I had just visited Grey Zietz. When I visited, I asked him if he was ever worried about making things work. He said that when he had finished printing his first project, a month went by, and he wasn’t worried. After a second month went by, he started to get worried. But in the third month another project came. That was 50 years ago. He told me to enjoy the downtime, because I may not get any more.

After looking out the window for a while, I opened my computer and found an email from @nd_abi asking if I’d make a business card for them. That was the first invoice sent for my new career of just being a solo practitioner.

I struggled a bit with this card. I imagined a different thing in my head. I eventually realized I could make to similar shapes out of the copy, and I stuck to that. This card is printed in 18pt Centaur and Arrighi, with 1pt leading, on @gmundpaper Matt. The ink is Hanco Sable Black, which I really love.

Working on some new box technique. There is not too much out there on how to make boxes—most of what I’ve learned has been from looking at other peoples boxes, and looking at pictures online. @ts.lofton helped me figure out this box, as well as some new language to describe it. I find designing the label well area to be really difficult. You have to consider so many things. The color of the object being boxed, the color of the board pastedown, the color of the label, the ink color of the printed label. You really need to be patient as you work. They are great fun to make though, and are all absorbing. Thanks @lichenandbees @varun.dharma @marianamatos.xyz for the design input.

I’d like to formally introduce the Center for the Book Arts Detroit, or BAD for short.

The last year I’ve thought a lot about what happens to all these things should something happen to me, or should I decide to have a more private practice. The things that are contained in this shop are most of my life’s work up to this point. It is also a significant amount of Chen’s life and labor. It’s the labor, time, kindness of my friends & mentors and I want it to continue regardless if I am running it or not.

I also want more out of this space. I want this for myself, for the people that have studied here and for all the folk who can use it in the future. I want more opportunities to send people abroad. I want more poetry to be printed. More books! And I want to grow this Book Arts community in Detroit.

So—please follow @bookartsdetroit This is where you can find information on Open Studio, Classes, Lectures, the Study Groups and special guests. And please share this around. I’d like everyone who has followed me or Small Works to follow BAD as well, and continue to support the space as it grows into something new.

Cards were printed on Gmund Matt Antique Ivory, with Centaur and Arrighi type in 18pt. Thanks to @chelseaayumikoga for the printing help.

As @paperbookintensive ends, there is an auction that benefits the future scholarship students. As a donation, I made 3 boxes that represent the classes I participated in.

The first box is covered with paper I made in @nicholascladis class. Inside is a collection of pencil shavings from @kenleslieartist class saved by @temperedeast so that we can all continue to draw together.

The second box is covered in more handmade papers from class, and some decorative papers from home. This box has a sample from the students in this class, which has a wide range of techniques and approaches to making paper.

Last, a box made with paper from Steve Pittlekow’s class that also contains samples from everyone in the class.

If you’re at PBI today, you can bid on them this afternoon.

I’d be the first person to tell you that I’m not going to be a serious paper marbler. I do like doing it though. It’s a real challenge for me to think through the process, the color, how things behave. To make tests and check those test. To make a lot of mistakes and not just give up.

I also have a hard time with decorative papers because I like them to be technical, but also not take center stage. I like them to be muted, or natural, and it makes finding a good color balance difficult. I think it’s easy to be seduced into having a full blast of color, because that’s something that marbled paper can do better than most techniques. But I find myself really impressed when can pull some colors together that set a tone and are still quiet.

These papers are from a class with Steve Pittlekow at @paperbookintensive at @oxbowschoolofart I’d like to thank him for his guidance and patience. I’d also like to thank Nancy Morains for some of these color palettes. She pulled this sheet that was just beautiful, and it fit in with these images that I had in my head of the American west, and Cormac McCarthy. It really encouraged me to keep making papers.

Delighted to print these cards for @brian_kritzman_design and his American Bonsai Furniture project. In addition to their practice as a designer and craftsperson, Brian cares for Bonsai and designs / makes furniture for them. His latest work explores the tradition of Bonsai within a midwestern setting.
