@mapleserum took this photo of Chen, Varun, & I when they were visiting the shop. It reminds me that we need to take more photos. I don’t have as many photos as I’d like, especially in the space. I wish everyone was in the shop that day because the photo came out so nice.

Many thanks to Dan, looking forward to our next visit with you and Becky.

Update from @penlandschool We’re all stuck on the mountain for a few days. The weather isn’t too bad, but everything is covered in ice. We aren’t able to drive off campus until the ice clears, and to avoid too much movement some of us have moved our studios to the dining hall. We’re all working off of the dining tables in the patio, with iced over windows around us. It’s nice. It’s like having strange grad school studio spaces. I’m grateful for Penland taking care of us and also feeding us while we’re waiting out the ice. But we still have power, and we’re still safe.

I brought some books down to work on. I have been rounding and backing small books, and trying to develop some technique. It’s not the easiest thing to figure out, but I’ve had some good results. I’m really happy with the feel of the book. Hopefully I’ll have a good handle on things by the time I leave.

Earlier this year @ladder4winebar asked if we could make a case for their ever changing wine menu. The timing was great—we were about to open a bindery in the fall, and weren’t sure of what jobs we could bring into that space. This allowed Chen & I to work as designers of objects, and have the opportunity to bounce the finished design directly to the new bindery to be produced.

The wine menu case came with some constraints. The case had to be able to be assembled and disassembled to accommodate changes. It also had to be able to expand and contract with inventory changes. The materials wrapping the case needed to withstand a restaurant environment, and also be brought inside and outside without changes in temperature/humidity causing issues.

The resulting menu case is covered in Skiver Green imitation leather, sourced from @hollanders.book.and.paper.arts , with brass plated screw posts. The case has covered “pads” that add thickness and weight to case, and make the finished case lay flat. A pocket with a “cuff” was designed to place additional items into, for specials or for notes to customers.

As an embellishment, two lines were foil stamped onto the case. This decoration reflects the lines painted into the main seating area floor—a memory from when Ladder 4 was still a fire station (thanks for that idea, @quartdeli ).

And with that, I can say that the bindery is now open for business. I’m glad to take on similar projects related to making cases or book objects. I am still learning new things, but I am always glad to talk about projects. Thanks again @ladder4winebar for trusting me with this project, I am most grateful.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our friends, colleagues, clients, and their guests who came out to our holiday party. We are grateful that we are able to continue to work, and it is not lost on us that it is because of the support of our community that we are able to do so.

We often think about how lucky we are to be creating physical things in this increasingly digital world, and that we are guided by wonderful mentors, peers, friends, and the city we live in. To have the privilege of tiny rooms to imagine a beautiful design world in is a joy. So thank you again. Thank you for your help. Thank you for keeping us in business. Thank you for indulging our idiosyncrasies. Thank you for having a good time with us. It is all a good time.

On Thursday night I’ll be moderating a talk with Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. at Eastern Michigan University. The reception for an exhibition of Amos’s work is that night, and we’ll be talking for around 20 minutes, and then talking to everyone in attendance. If you haven’t seen either of us in a while, and are in the area, I encourage you to come out and hang out with us. Come celebrate the wonderful work he’s made. Let’s have a community conversation on printing, and making, and what it means to be alive currently.

Sketchbook: Studies 1

I don't think I claim to know a lot about anything (okay maybe), but I try to keep the door open to learning. I've never met a horse is one example.

Ever draw a horse from memory? It's pretty funny.

New for MoCCA Fest 2024: Wrestletober Vol. 1: Jamie Hayter cover

Hey. We did look at the digital color layout earlier. If you know Riso, it has a different and arguably more beautiful output. Printed at @smallworksdetroit with Bright Red, Yellow, and Lake Blue inks, I think the exciting feeling of a wrestler's walk-out/entrance reverberates through this one. When will @jamiehayter return? I can tell you it can't be soon enough!

Very happy with how this cover turned out! I'm still fairly new to Riso, so every time I print, I learn more new aspects about the method. This new cover has an extra rare 1:10 variant, so you'll be lucky to get it? I know I have no business making variants of my own stuff, but I thought it would be a fun chase.

Regardless, say hello this weekend at MoCCA Arts Fest if you're around or goin' ok

it seems impossible that a little over a year ago we were standing in a windowless concrete box, thinking we could turn it into a bakery. every small thing we did along the way felt like a big thing— even if it was something we were re-doing for the eighth time, it was still one step closer to us being “basically” open. we’ve been incredibly lucky to have had the unwavering support, generosity, and kindness of a long list of folks who have helped get us here.

with incredible gratitude and excitement, our doors will actually, finally, be open tomorrow morning at 8am. and we simply cannot wait to see you.

MoCCA Arts Fest 2024.

Preparing for this year's MoCCA Fest was kind of a blitz, since I only had one week to prepare anything new. Luckily, I invested a lot of time in myself over the last few months. Between running my Comics 2 and Junior Illustration Studio, it has added up. I'm happy to have a short break from travelling, at least.

I was excited to see and do more than just MoCCA though. New York has so much to discover every time, and I'm from across the Hudson, so maybe that says something about me not doing enough. There was my brother's (and our friend Jonah's) birthday party at Lucky 7 Bar in Jersey City, dinner with our friends Alyx and Ilya, seeing the Mike Perry exhibition, good food, and much more.

Back to the event– this year's MoCCA Fest felt a little bit more special because I gave some space to my youngest brother, Chris. It was @chrespyo's first major event to show the work he's been putting into comics and illustration. I'm very proud of him.

I'm also proud of the @ccs_illustration students I encouraged to apply to the event. I helped them plan for fundraising, travel, and lending some knowledge for making books. Luke, Eden, Felix, and Jacob were great out in NYC, and the rest of the students who contributed their work to the table are amazing.

Overall, MoCCA Fest was wonderful, as always. I've been working this show since 2015 (~wow~). It's one of my favorite shows to be at. It's heart-warming to see all the friends I've made over the last decade-and-a-half.

Somehow, I don't have pictures of me and my brother at our first event together, but there's @jonahdunstan at the end there, talking in a Western accent about how it would be better if he had a Sam Elliot mustache.

Leaving New York and New Jersey is always bittersweet. I love coming back whenever I can. Until next time, MoCCA Fest!
