Last weekend to visit the @rha.arts RHA annual exhibition. Many thanks to @mccannfitzgerald for their award. ‘Alltar’, 200cmx220cm. In ‘Alltar’ there are spatial, temporal and linguistic dualities at play.
The scene blends domestic clutter, art historical landscape and surreal juxtapositions, a merging of so called high and low imagery rammed together in the service of this painting.
The appropriation is from Patinir and the art historical imagery is interrupted by an obsolete television set rendered useless and without a plug. Behind the boy a satin curtain appears to be illusionistically attached to the painting itself with no convincingly means of support. The drapery marks the threshold between the inside and outside, between the seen and unseen and refers to the title of the painting. Alltar, which is an Irish word and a counterpoint to ceantar which means physical locality. Alltar is a liminal space, a parallel world of the imagination or afterlife.
MacDara my son stands upright, facing us directly holding a jaw bone. He looks both deviant and uncertain. His bright green shirt and modern clothes contrast sharply with Patinir’s landscape He carries a jawbone in his hand. To the left a helium balloon is painted on top of the image, a vanitas symbol, a humorous cartoon version of nature smiling over the landscape. It is both absurd and poignant, a cheap cheerful commodified surface image floating over a landscape of environmental and emotional heaviness. The bone and the balloon are a jarring combination of innocence and death.
The children’s drawings overlaid at the base of the painting are like small bright and hopeful interruptions of a child’s creativity, they are gestures of continuity, proof that even as things unravel, the impulse to make, create, draw meaning persists. However because they are painted over a scene of uncertainty they’re also ghostly and precarious as if the world itself is a child’s drawing, erasable and fragile. taken in RHA Gallery by @geraldineoneillstudio

This month's Little Interview is with Geraldine O'Neill, one of the artists featured in our current exhibition Panorama Europa!

Every month we ask the same set of cultural questions to one of our artistic, academic or civic collaborators.

Over the last number of years, we have interviewed diverse members of the Glucksman community - artists, academics, staff members, guests, audiences and workshop participants. The responses are funny, inspiring, revealing and always a great read.

@geraldineoneillstudio is an Irish artist whose work spans painting and sculpture. Her practice engages with themes of memory, place and personal narrative, often combining figurative and abstract elements. O’Neill responds to the increasing confrontation and human relationship with the Anthropocene, a geological time marked by human trace embedded within layers of the Earth’s structure.

Ciorcal Comhrá ar líne - 19ú Feabhra, 1 i.n.

Tá níos mó i gceist le portráidíocht ná cosúlacht. An mhí seo, beimid ag fiosrú coincheap na portráidíochta agus a ról sa tsochaí inniu. Beidh Geraldine O’Neill ina healaíontóir rannpháirteach. Féachfaimid siar ar phortráidí ó thaispeántais san am atá thart, pléifimid portráidíocht ar bhealach níos leithne, agus breithneofar conas a léiríonn an portráid an saol comhaimseartha.

🔗 Tá an ócáid saor in aisce, ach ní mór duit áit a chur in áirithe roimh ré.

💡Is imeacht míosúil ar líne i nGaeilge é Ciorcal Comhrá agus is deis é labhairt le foireann na Gailearaí faoi obair sa bhailiúchán nó faoi thaispeántas.

Ciorcal Comhrá online – 19 February, 1pm

Portraiture is more than just likeness. This month, we will explore the concept of portraiture and its role in society today. Geraldine O’Neill will be a participating artist. We will look back at portraits from past exhibitions, discuss portraiture more broadly, and consider how the portrait reflects contemporary life.

🔗The event is free, but you must reserve a place in advance.

💡Ciorcal Comhrá is a monthly online event in Irish and is an opportunity to talk to the Gallery staff about work in the collection or an exhibition.
