Fantastic to see these two works by Geraldine O’Neill exhibited at the Glucksman in Cork yesterday - each shows one of her children in a landscape that evokes the fantastical vistas of early Renaissance paintings, with the children placed in the elevated position in which we would once have seen a saint performing a miracle or enacting a mythic scene. Here instead the central figures are caught up in the banality of housework - the Sisyphean task of attempting to impose order on the chaotic everyday.
.
Around them are elements of contemporary vanitas - foil balloons that will soon wrinkle and droop, a newborn baby in a depersonalised medical container, a cow skull.

St Peter’s Fish (aka John Dory) fly through the air, a reminder of how mythic human narratives are inscribed onto the natural world (in this case, a saint’s fingerprint) by way of ‘proof’ of the miraculous. There are reminders too of O’Neill’s own craft - her paintbrush, and the saucepan for her rabbit skin glue. Characters from art history pop up in the margins - a monstrous fishy apparition from Hieronymus Bosch, a penitent - all beneath an ominous, gathering, storm-heavy sky, over which a child’s hand has scrawled a hopeful but hopelessly out of place rainbow.
